Infocalypse Now: Deepfakes and the War on Democracy

Infocalypse Now: Deepfakes and the War on Democracy

Attention, bots, trolls and rogue A.I.s! This week our own Nina Schick publishes her new book Deep Fakes and the Infocalypse: What You Urgently Need To Know – and its revelations about how high technology can create terrifyingly plausible fake humans in video or audio, for political ends, will scare the hell out of you. What can we do to stop bad actors from Russia, China and elsewhere from bringing about the literal collapse of consensual reality?

Plus: The Brexit Drain to Spain. Peer-to-peer perfidy in the new Lords. And Iain Duncan Smith forgets to read the small print, again.

    - “The number one goal is to create chaos and distrust on authority. Russia has been pushing the narrative that the CIA created COVID to kill Chinese people.” – Nina Schick
    - “Trump has stoked this mistrust… Our damaged information system is corrupting our democracy.” – Nina Schick
    - “If everything can be faked, and everyone has plausible deniability, then that’s open season for bad actors.” – Nina Schick

Presented by Ros Taylor with Naomi Smith, Nina Schick and Ian Dunt. Produced by Andrew Harrison. Assistant producer: Jacob Archbold. Audio production by Alex Rees. Remainiacs is a Podmasters production.

Labour’s Infinity War reignites – plus guest JOHN CRACE

Labour’s Infinity War reignites – plus guest JOHN CRACE

Continuity Corbynism picks a fight with the Starmer Leadership in the aftermath of the antisemitism court settlement. Will anything ever end the party’s Left-Right Infinity War? Plus: Brace yourself for a “low quality, low profile” face-saving Deal with the EU. And special guest John Crace, the Guardian’s demob-happy parliamentary sketch writer, takes us through the highs (subs pls check) and lows of the Johnson Parliament so far.

    - “Starmer has proved a lot more ruthless than anyone expected as leader.” – Ros Taylor
    - “If Starmer’s made a mistake it’s treating Johnson like a ten-year old, when in fact Johnson’s more like a toddler.” – John Crace
    - “Keir Starmer, a former DPP, will have a fairly good idea of when a case ought to be stopped…” – Alex Andreou
    - “If people are on their knees, Boris Johnson’s buffoonish persona will not play well with them.” – John Crace

Presented by Dorian Lynskey with Ros Taylor and Alex Andreou. Produced by Andrew Harrison. Assistant producer: Jacob Archbold. Audio production by Alex Rees. Remainiacs is a Podmasters production.

Russia Report: Gremlins from the Kremlin

Russia Report: Gremlins from the Kremlin

“Приветствую! Welcome to podcast where panel talk about how great nation of Russia did not interfere with British elections, no way. Is Russophobia only. Честно! Also, do not read Russia Report, is also Russophobic. Спасибо!”

Meanwhile: Is now a good time to pick a fight with China, however badly China might be acting? Why have MPs who demanded control of our trade deals just voted away their power to, er, control our trade deals? And there’s a job going where you report to Dominic Cummings.

    - “The moral is, if anything in any way affects our special Brexit cult, then apparently we must not look at it.” – Arthur Snell
    - “We now know these guys are weak. They won’t defend the country.” – Ian Dunt
    - “We do have to get real. Russian interference alone could not have swung the Referendum.” – Naomi Smith
    - “This government is attacking Labour for being soft on Russia – while literally being soft on Russia itself and taking money from Russia.” – Dorian Lynskey

Presented by Dorian Lynskey with Naomi Smith, Ian Dunt and Arthur Snell. Produced by Andrew Harrison. Assistant producer: Jacob Archbold. Audio production by Alex Rees. Remainiacs is a Podmasters production.

Bunker Russia Report taster: It’s A Vladi Disgrace

It’s a Russian Report special on today’s edition of our little sibling podcast The Bunker, with Ian Dunt, Naomi Smith, Alex Andreou and Helen Lewis talking about the sheer cynicism of the Government’s do-nothing approach to Putin’s interference with our democracy. Here’s a taster – get the whole thing here or wherever you get your podcasts.

RED TAPE TIME MACHINE plus Return of the Dunt

RED TAPE TIME MACHINE plus Return of the Dunt

The Government launches yet another, definitely final campaign to sell the “benefits” of No Deal. What do we think of Britain’s bold New Start into £13bn of 1970s-style red tape and towering tariffs on food basics? Plus, concreting over the Garden of England: there is some corner of a Kent field that will forever be a giant lorry park. The return of Ian Dunt. And Monarchy In The UK: With the Queen and Harry AWOL in moments of crisis and Prince Andrew definitely sweating now, is there any point to the Royals any more?

    - “I just wish we had SOME decent libertarians…” – Ian Dunt
    - “Why do we NEED the pomp and ceremony of the monarchy? Why do we need the spectacle?” – Ros Taylor

Presented by Dorian Lynskey with Naomi Smith, Ros Taylor and Ian Dunt. Produced by Andrew Harrison. Assistant producer: Jacob Archbold. Audio production by Alex Rees. Remainiacs is a Podmasters production.

Can’t Get Enough

I listen to every possible podcast I can find about Brexit but Remainiacs is my absolute favourite. Please carry on. You make me laugh in amongst lol the tears of anguish.

ChillsnMills ,

Unmissable

Serious analysis, but irreverant and too. Unlike similar podcasts (are you listening New European?) the humour never gets in the way of the very real points the cast is making.

Ian Dunt's detailed skewering of the Brexiteers' shambolic approach to trade is worth the price of entry alone (as his Class A swearing!)

If you only listen to one podcast on Brexit, this is the one.

Hamish DB ,

Essential part of the week

Keep it up :)
