This exhibition features selected works from Crystal Bridges’ permanent collection—including a major new acquisition—combined with objects on loan to examine the manifestation of light both as spiritual emblem and artistic medium. From the Luminist artists of the nineteenth century who focused on light as a representation of the sublime in nature—to Impressionist artists who endeavored to capture the optical effects of light in motion—to contemporary artists such as James Turrell and Dan Flavin who use light as their medium to manipulate the perceptions of the viewer, this exhibition will trace the fascinating evolution of light in American art. This exhibition is sponsored by GE Lighting.
