If someone says to you that they are a reinforcement-based dog trainer, what does that really mean? There are a lot of ways of training dogs with food or toys. Even though they fall under the reinforcement grouping, the different types of training are all dramatically different. We’re covering what I tried in the past, what I suggest you avoid, and the most effective way to shape your dog.

    In the episode you'll hear:

    • About training dogs by luring and using food or toys as a lure.
    • What's termed observational learning or social learning, or sometimes modelling.
    • About Stella the Kelpie and Bunny the Sheepadoodle using buttons to communicate.
    • Some of the words that dogs understand and words that excite my dogs.
    • What capturing behavior means and how to get a captured behavior like a stretch or talking.
    • About shaping, and the critical difference between two styles used to shape a behavior.
    • The reason I don't free shape these days and prefer layered shaping.
    • How to make the correct choice for the dog the obvious choice.
    • Why splitting behaviours down creates confidence for dogs and give you a strong foundation.

If you were to get 100 of the world’s best dog trainers in a room, there would be a lot of disagreements. However, if you asked, “what’s the number one training mistake people make with their new puppy?” 99 of those dog trainers would give you the same answer. If you were to google, how do I get my puppy to stop, search results like stop peeing in the house, stop barking, and stop putting everything in their mouth, will be returned. These puppy behavior problems are related to the number one mistake dog trainers agree about: giving a puppy too much freedom.

    In the episode you'll hear:

    • Why puppies can’t have too much freedom without something bad happening.
    • How puppy zones prevent the rehearsal of undesired behaviours.
    • About the stages of puppy development related to giving freedom.
    • How I utilize crates, ex-pens and baby gates for puppy zones and safety.
    • The reason not to use a doggy door with your puppy.

Why Do Dogs Bark In Cars And How To Stop It #165

Help, how can I stop my dog barking in the car while I’m driving!? That’s one of the most common questions we receive, and it’s a dilemma as you can’t drive and train your dog at the same time. But you can fix it! It starts with knowing why a dog is barking in the first place. It could be fear, excitement, anticipation, or maybe the dog is triggered by what they see out the car window.

    In the episode you'll hear:

    • All the reasons a dog might be barking while you are driving.
    • How a video can help you diagnose why your dog barks.
    • About using management for dogs who bark in cars.
    • The reason to narrow down what might be triggering your dog’s barking.
    • How eliminating rehearsals of the undesired behaviour is vital.
    • What to do if you have two or more dogs barking while you are travelling in the car.
    • That sometimes limiting your dog’s view out the windows can eliminate barking.
    • Why to reinforce your dog for being quiet when in the car and ways you can set that up.
    • About using negative punishment when there is a history of rich reinforcement for that which is correct.
    • The strategy of stopping the car when your dog is barking in anticipation.
    • Why you need to counter condition and desensitize your dog first.
    • What to do if your dog is triggered by something when they are in the car.
    • How to help a dog who gets overexcited about car trips and going places in the car.
    • All the progressions to stopping your dog barking when you are driving.
    • That barking is a conditioned behaviour and not a conscious response by your dog.

Amazing content to help transform me from a dog trainer to a dog educator

I can’t describe how interesting and useful this podcast has been to me (owner of a very under confident rescue). The way Susan is engaging as well as interesting means I really take on board what’s she’s saying, and all her concepts are easily understandable but also ground breaking.

My favourite saying “only the dog knows for sure what’s being trained” has revolutionised the way I train my dog and also understand and be more sympathetic to his reactivity. I can happily say I have transformed the way I have trained my dog and do so with much more patience and kindness now.

Thanks so much Susan from Hannah and Kenobi in Perth Australia
(If you ever read this comment and reply or mention it in your podcast I will die!!!)

Lessons in more than just dog training

If everyone who owns a dog listened to Susan’s wisdom, there would be far fewer rescue dogs, and more compassion in the world. I love this podcast and wait impatiently for each new episode. Susans methods are far more than dog training. They are about compassion, clarity and understanding. Something we could all do with more of in our lives.
