By the late 1970s, the once heralded haven for those struggling with addiction had turned into a multi-million dollar corporation. With its sights set less on saving lives and more on cashing in and accumulating guns, the formerly sterling reputation of Synanon began to tarnish. As soon as they began acting on their violent threats, the thin thread holding the whole group together frayed into oblivion. But the group’s legacy is one thing its virulent dictator couldn’t control. This week’s episode is The Cult of Synanon - Part 3.

My one true podcast love
The perfect mix of comedy, personality and spookiness! My absolute favourite podcast (and I listen to a LOT). Heather and Christie are honest, witty and smart, and I love their ability to suspend disbelief and lean into some more outlandish supernatural theories in a fun and lighthearted way. Out of all the podcasts I listen to, this is the one that feels most like a comfy and fun hang out with friends and I always leave in a better mood than I started.
I loved it and listened weekly before Heather gave up her job and this went to a new format
I have finally got around to writing a review, as I listen to the JFK episode. And I want to say: long time listener, first time caller. But actually, I haven’t really listened for the last 18 months. This show is really on the down low now. I loved it when Heather was still working and would talk about the law. I loved it when it was a genuine discussion about material where Heather, in particular, expressed a professional view which was based on Knowsley. And Christie being relatable as the non-lawyer but smart and interesting. Now, I have tried, I really have, but the vox pop “people’s stories” are unlistenable. And, I have woven through that finding the content of episodes just by you ladies on subjects of interest. But, you broke me and lost a listener. Because hidden in this is the other truth that you stopped doing studio recordings of your live content and went instead to recordings of live shows. For 18 months I have been trying to love you but this just lost you a customer and advocate. Your live shows are fun but they are also flaky. They are shallow and chatty. They aren’t that beautiful balance you used to have of smart and funny and sassy. If this new model brings you more money, great. But it is at the expense of people who really liked what you used to do and feel your essence has gone. Others have filled your space and I don’t care enough to be loyal to a second rate ideal any longer. I hope you can find your way back.
