Pandora Sykes on Navigating Contemporary Chaos

Pandora Sykes on Navigating Contemporary Chaos

How do we know we’re doing it right? This is the title of Pandora Sykes’s debut book, which was published in hardcover last year, and has just come out in paperback.

Pandora is a British writer and podcaster. If you’re one of the millions of women who tuned in each week to listen to The High Low Podcast, which she co-hosted with Dolly Alderton, you’ll know her well (and probably, like us, you greatly miss the show). But as we speak about today, closing one career chapter no matter how wonderful, exciting and rewarding it was, will enviably open you up to new chapters that perhaps you weren’t expecting.

How Do We Know We're Doing It Right? is a book which explores how to navigate our contemporary chaos. Pandora explores how modern life is full of choices – and how with endless possibility, there comes a feeling of restlessness, like we're somehow failing to live our best life. Pandora tells me that this isn’t a book of answers, it’s a book of questions. Questions such as What does doing it righteven look like? And why do so many women feel like they're getting it wrong?

Camilla Freeman Topper On Her Using Her Fashion Empire To Drive Change

Camilla Freeman Topper On Her Using Her Fashion Empire To Drive Change

A lot has changed for women in the last thirty years - and for the better. But while we’re busy smashing glass ceilings, tackling institutionalised gender disparity and making change with the #metoo movement, sadly, when it comes to the statistics for ovarian cancer, very little has changed in that time. For Camilla Freeman-Topper, one half of the brother-sister Australian fashion institution that is Camilla and Marc, the statistics hit home. It was nearly thirty years ago that she lost her mother to ovarian cancer, when Camilla was just a child. “In Australia, three women die from ovarian cancer every day”, she tells us. “This is shocking.”

But inspired by her mother’s legacy, Camilla is doing something about it, with the Camilla & Marc ‘Ovaries. Talk About Them’ campaign. In this conversation she takes us right back to the start of her journey. To the memories she has of her mother and the values she instilled in Camilla and Marc. To the how and why of launching her own label and navigating the tricky fashion world for over a decade. To the role grief has played in her life, and to the way Covid has impacted her work and her role as a mother of four.

Despite the sobering statistics, ultimately this is a story of hope and empowerment, of driving for change and using something as simple as a t-shirt to make a difference. Let’s meet Camilla Freeman-Topper.

Elise Loehnen On Leaving GOOP & New Beginnings

Elise Loehnen On Leaving GOOP & New Beginnings

Today, we are thrilled to be interviewing the former Chief Content Officer of GOOP Elise Lohenen.

Gwyneth Paltrow described Elise as "like a sister to me", so after seven years at GOOP, stepping down was a big decision – but the right one. And today’s conversation – a recording from a LIVE event we did with Elise - will remind you that sometimes the hardest path, is usually the right one.

The time has come for Elise to start what she calls the "literal next chapter". She's writing a book and starting a podcast – so watch this space. It’s all coming soon and I’m sure like me, you can’t wait.

In this episode we're of course chatting about her career at GOOP (and how she got there), but we're also unpacking what it feels like to pivot and make a big career change at the height of her success. We'll talk about what it's like to leave a role that feels like a part of your identity. Plus lots of other things we all grapple with such as how to deal with criticism, how to have a fulfilling career, and of course, the sisterhood she surrounds herself with.

You might want to grab a pen and paper – my reading list expanded tenfold after this conversation. A writer and editor first, Elise has seen media move through a period of monumental change and her insights on career, culture and life in general are so interesting. Let’s meet this amazing woman.

Jodie Fox On Learning From Triumph and Failure

Jodie Fox On Learning From Triumph and Failure

The higher the height, the greater the fall - or so they say. Jodie Fox has seen the business world from a dizzying height. Her footwear empire Shoes Of Prey – a fashion technology empire which customised every single pair of shoes that was delivered - raised over $35 million Australian dollars in venture capital. At their peak they had over 220 employees, and their store in Australian department store David Jones did double its forecasted revenue in the first 12 months, becoming the highest earner per square meter on the shoe floor. It was a runaway success. But in August 2018, the founders closed company after sales-growth didn’t match the pace needed for further investment. Jodie went on to write a brilliant book entitled Reboot: Probably More Than You Ever Wanted to Know about Starting a Global Business. She shared vulnerably and openly about her successes and her failures - and in this conversation, we ask all the nitty gritty questions about how the self-confessed ‘alpha girl’ has tackled identity, purpose, and her newest role - motherhood. Whether you’re interested in building a business, in leadership styles, in the lows and whys of moving internationally, or you’re just looking for a hell of a story, strap in for this raw and honest ride as we talk shoes, shame, and oversharing.
