In this podcast, we discuss mystical works of literature, primarily Taoist text, and how they relate to alcohol recovery. Taoist Philosophy can be an excellent tool for embracing the idea of a “Higher Power.” Nature offers all of the examples necessary for a concept of a source of all life, much different but yet very similar in many ways to more traditional religious thinking.

    Chuang Tzu – Leaving Things Alone!

    The title says it all. Another view of the Wu Wei from a slightly different angle. How do we not interfere, allow, stay in balance, be at rest, be human, be still, and enjoy our original nature? This particular story also brought meditation and stillness in as a solution.

    Chuang Tzu – What Would a Taoist Pray and Cracking the Safe!

    Chuang Tzu – What Would a Taoist Pray and Cracking the Safe!

    Before our discussion of this story, we discussed prayer - what we thought a Taoist would pray. Concerning the story, we talked about how our fears keep us trapped into making decisions we believe are protecting us that are actually causing harm. We also talked about freedom in the same light as fear in our decision makings. Decisions we make that we think are leading us to freedom, that are instead enslaving us even more. The harms in my life were just as necessary as the

    Chuang Tzu – Two Kings and No-Form!

    Chuang Tzu – Two Kings and No-Form!

    The road to hell is paved with good intentions. A good discussion of how difficult it is to let go and let God. The more we try to fix and control, the bigger mess we make. Many times we kill what we are trying to improve – regardless of our motive.

    Chuang Tzu – Monkey Mountain!

    Chuang Tzu – Monkey Mountain!

    I want to thank Craig M. for filling in as host. A listener, Devin P, requested this story, which was close to the end of the book, so we moved it up. After an excellent discussion, we concluded that everything we have is a gift to be given away. Only through viewing all as a gift do we have the possibility of depending on our Higher Power rather than our limited abilities. Thank you, Devin P! I hope you enjoy it!

    Chuang Tzu – Man is Born in Tao!

    Excellent discussion on the Moral of this story: “All the fish needs is to get lost in water. All man needs is to get lost in Tao.” How do you get lost in Tao? What does this mean in practical daily life? We hope you enjoy our conversation!

    Acceptance in Unacceptable Situations!

    Acceptance in Unacceptable Situations!

    Are our actions different when there is a situation we can change versus a situation we cannot change? Or are our actions, in reality, the same? The emphasis is normally on what we can or cannot change – not the acceptance of everything as it is first. Excellent follow-up discussion after last week's conversation of the Metamorphosis story. We discussed the serenity prayer in depth, including the rarely mentioned second stanza. The second stanza of the serenity prayer is included below.
    God grant me the serenity
    To accept the things I cannot change;
    Courage to change the things I can;
    And wisdom to know the difference.

    Living one day at a time;
    Enjoying one moment at a time;
    Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;

    Amen.
