Tech Society 098 - Is The Law Ready For The New Web?

In this episode of Tech Society, hosts Alex and John from Ninja Software speak with Natasha Blycha, global head of digital law at law firm Herbert Smith Freehills. She and her team are beginning to unravel the legal answers that technology is beginning to ask. Starting as a competition lawyer, she returned from a decade-long, family-focused sabbatical into a completely changed world that presented her new legal challenges.

During their conversation, Natasha ponders on the implications of the emerging digital landscape - talking about how the legal framework treats digital structures: NFTs, smart contracts, DAOs, tokens, cryptocurrencies, metaverses, etc… or how it doesn’t treat them. What will the law have to do to keep up with technology that is constantly evolving? In trading crypto, are you breaking the law? Who is ultimately responsible? The answers to these questions, if there are any, are more complex than you may think.

Tech Society 097 - Having What It Takes

How hard is it to take your product or even your company to market? The answer to that question may depend on who you are, what you do, and how prepared you are to persevere when the going gets tough.

In this episode of Tech Society, hosts Alex and John from Ninja Software have the chance to speak with Sheryl Frame, one of Perth’s most well-known and experienced commercialisation specialists. From humble beginnings in the medi-tech sector, Sheryl definitely walks the talk. She has established and successfully sold several businesses, held management positions in publicly listed companies, and has helped many entrepreneurs prepare for market. For ten years, she was a Commercialisation Adviser for the Australian Government’s Accelerating Commercialisation program, which provided public funding for companies with innovative solutions. She has also been involved in organisations that help women in business; AWISE, Australian Women in IT, Science and Engineering, WiTWA, SBE Australia, and others.

In this episode, Sheryl gives her thoughts on the growth of entrepreneurship in Western Australia, the unique challenges faced by women entering this space, team dynamics, sole founders, and recollections on how some of Perth’s local businesses have prepared themselves to market their products on the open market. Tech Society 094 - L003 Diversity Matters

    Tech Society 094 - L003 Diversity Matters

When we talk about diversity, the focus normally centers on the amount participation of women in “traditionally” male-dominated spaces: engineering, computer science, technology. But as we are about to learn, diversity is more about empowerment, giving equal opportunity to more people, especially those who are often looked over.
Tech Society presents the third instalment in our Leadership series; in this episode, we are sitting down with Pia Turcinov - a corporate lawyer by trade, with broad and strategic experience across a range of industries. Her talents in business and leadership has her become a leading influence in the entrepreneurship, STEM and innovation spaces.
Tech Society hosts Alex and John from Ninja Software speak with Pia about trends in the technology space (both here in Perth and further afield), the future of work, and the broadening idea of “diversity” in tech: in industry, in workplaces, and in leadership. Her involvement with the group Women In Technology WA (WITWA) has given her a great insight into what needs to be done to break down barriers for all that want to enter the tech scene.

In a world where online platforms or applications are prevalent, collecting and sharing large amounts of personal information, what is the meaning of privacy? Can privacy be protected by technology… or even a bigger question, should it?
In the latest episode of Holy War, Tech Society hosts Alex and John from Ninja Software attempt to find answers to these important questions by examining the subject of privacy owithin the online space with commercial lawyer Dirk Feinauer and cybersecurity specialist Brenda van Rensburg. During the episode, we find out how much information is out there about us, a breakdown of the basics of the subject, how the law works now, and what happens when rule of law breaks down.
