Wondery Presents Life is Short with Justin Long

Wondery Presents Life is Short with Justin Long

Is it just me or is time flying by? How do we make the most out of our short time here on Earth? That’s what we’re here to find out. I’m Justin Long and I’ve been an actor for most of my life, so I’m used to getting inside the heads of the characters I play. But now that I’m getting older (I’m 41 now, yikes), I want to peek inside the heads of real people to learn how they find meaning in life. I’m also very curious what their favorite snack food is, and what emoji they use most often — ya know, the REALLY important stuff. Every episode I’ll get personal with all kinds of people, from actors to musicians to deep thinkers who fascinate me. My brother Christian is on hand each episode to keep me honest, and occasionally remind me about some of the embarrassing things I’ve done over the years. Join us, or if you have more important things to do, that’s okay too — life is short! Listen now at wondery.fm/JLArtHistoryBabes

First episode I listened to happened to be a rerun of the second part of your murder series. As people who have a foundation in art history and criticism you should be aware of the power of the frame for a conversation to alter the way we perceive its contents. Your amused relish of the gory details of various serial killers’ lives was positively disgusting and elevating their butchery to the level of “creative” is an insult to their victims and their victims’ loved ones, many of whom are still alive. You seem to be self-aware about the bad taste this kind of delight might leave in listeners’ mouths and try to mitigate our disgust at your tone by saying that you are tipsy and your laughter is a way of “dealing” with your discomfort around these topics. At such a far remove from JWGs victims you hardly have a right to behave in such a belittling way. This is not to say that such a conversation about art created by killers is not okay - not arguing for censorship here. But the breathless enjoyment you took in this was a complete disgrace. Maybe next time you might wish to discuss the art or accomplishments of these killers unnamed-in-your-podcast victims. I stopped shortly into it and will not return. These monsters don’t deserve any extra celebrity as spectacle, especially when even the veneer of gravity that comes with a true crime show is stripped away and it becomes a topic for voyeuristic laughs among four giggling mental lightweights shrieking “OMG CREEPY” and using crass sound effects like second rate FM radio DJs. NB: By the way I’m a woman in my twenties so this isn’t a critique of our way of speaking more generally. I just pray to God no one ever does a podcast about my rapist that sounds anything like this. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

I recently stumbled upon AHB on Instagram. This podcast is hilariously informative and I simply cannot get enough! I feel like I am part of the group when I am listening.
Currently half way through the Tarot episode and I have now decided I have to own a Rider Waite Smith deck that also specifies the illustrator (Pamela Colman Smith) - my family has always just had like a generic version.
I look forward to learning new things each episode. Keeping me warm and inspired at the start of a cold Melbourne winter!
Thanks Gal pals, keep doing the thing!
