Justin Smith is a writer and radio host in Melbourne, Australia. His column in The Herald Sun is read by hundreds of thousands of people each week. In this podcast he goes even deeper, speaking with the people he's written about, and the ones he wants to write about.
But it’s not just one man tapping out his opinion on the keyboard. Justin lets people tell their own stories in their own words. And while he lets them talk, he puts the smell of Melbourne in the nose of the listener and the reader — like the smell of coffee or the inside of a tram on a wet morning.
Justin is a talker, a writer, a storyteller, a campaigner and a good listener. He is The Columnist.
The Columnist is produced by Jay Mueller as part of the Bad Producer Podcast Network.

Death in the Kitchen

Bugger humility
Shane Warne is dead. The Columnist writes about why Warnie meant so much to us, and he speaks with entertainment reporter Peter Ford about the thousands of messages he got from the spin king over the years.

Just not free enough
The first rule of Fight Club is never talk about fight club. The first rule of censorship is to make people afraid to speak. The Columnist writes about the Chinese government rewriting of a cult movie, and two examples of free speech getting trampled in Australia. Champion basketball player Andrew Bogut was one of the victims — he talks with the Columnist.

The KIIS of death
After a couple of embarrassing political radio interviews, there’s been a shift in power from the AM stations to the FM. And The Columnist wrote about what it might mean to politicians who just thought it was all a bit of fun.
