    Ep. 0195: The Manichean Temptation

Here's something we haven't seen in a while -- a 'Silver Bullet DHP Episode' (ie, one in which CJ records a mostly-extemporaneous discussion of a concept from his mobile podcasting studio, the Silver Bullet, while commuting.) Kicking it Old School DHP on this one!
Join CJ on a couple of morning commutes to work for a freewheeling discussion on the Manichean Temptation, some of its dangers and problems, some real-world manifestations of the phenomenon, and related issues like the problem with 'extremists' (as CJ defines them here), and the need to think not just about ends, but also about means, as well as some brief info on the ways that cults exploit the Manichean Temptation to the extreme.

Ep. 0191: Aftershock: The Human Toll of War w/Mark Jacob

Ep. 0191: Aftershock: The Human Toll of War w/Mark Jacob

In this episode, CJ talks with Mark Jacob, one of the three co-authors of the recently published book Aftershock: The Human Toll of War (published by CityFiles Press).
This book presents an extensive collection of photos from the last year of World War II (many of which have never been seen before by the public) taken by US military photographers, scanned from the original negatives to give amazing picture quality, providing a unique, unfiltered, and often disturbing glimpse of what the latter phases of the largest total war in human history actually looked like. In many cases the authors have been able to research the backstories of the photos, and have provided descriptive captions that add detail and further humanize the stories told by the images.

A libertarian that we left-wingers should listen to

As a Left-winger in these troubled times, I don't have a lot of time for the idea that we need to sympathise with those we disagree with. Most of them turn out to be dishonest trolls. Prof CJ of the Dangerous History is a huge exception.

The Prof is both honest and intellectually substantial. Even those of us who don't agree with him will find plenty to chew on. Well worth your time.
