From Healing from Hypothalamic Amenorrhea to Motherhood with Personal Trainer Britney Motzcuz

Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA) is a common symptom or outcome of disordered eating and eating disorders.
The hypothalamus is an area of the brain that plays a central role in maintaining the balance of body systems. It receives input from throughout the body in the form of hormones and chemicals. It responds by secreting hormones that affect other organs including those involved in reproduction.
HA is essentially a condition where the Hypothalamus senses stress in the body, mostly due to low energy availability. The causes include insufficient energy intake, over exercise and/or insufficient body fat. In some cases lifestyle stress is also a contributing factor.
It is important to note that HA can occur in any body size and it doesn't only occur in people with diagnosed eating disorders, in athletes or people who do a lot of exercise. The main cause is insufficient energy to meet the body's demands.
In HA the body responds to low energy by switching off or dialing down non essential bodily functions in an effort to conserve energy. One of the most obvious signs in a loss of period. There are many other consequences of low energy availability including poor digestion, weakening of the bones, loss of libido, infertility, poor temperature regulation and exhaustion.
Your body switching into energy saving mode can be likened to the low battery mode of your iPhone. Certain functions or apps are disable and some are dialed down such as screen brightness.
Recovery requires correcting the energy balance, relieving stress such as over exercise to allow the body a chance to heal and in some cases weight gain if fat stores are inadequate for hormone production and for the body to perceive it is safe!
HA recovery is not an easy journey and often requires work with overcoming fears and limiting beliefs around body image and self worth in order to effectively promote healthy behaviour change.
Having my own personal experience in HA and know how stuck, scared and confused you can feel I have become extremely passionate, educated, skilled and dedicated to help other women overcome their fears and roadblocks to help them to recover their period, fertility, set them free and give them the health and life they deserve!
In this episode I talk to fellow HA recovered Britney Motzcuz who I came across on my own journey! When we connected it was amazing how much we had in common and I know you will too!
Britney is also a personal trainer and in this episode we chat about how our innocent love for fitness and pursuit for health went a bit off track to no longer being health enhancing.
We share our struggles with denial, fears of recovery, our motivations for recovery, what recovery taught and gifted us with and words of wisdom we would now give our younger self!
Now being pregnant myself I am even more grateful for what recovery has offered me and here I am not talking about just fertility. Brittany shares her journey through recovery, to pregnancy, postpartum and motherhood!
I hope this episode helps you feel understood, provides you with clarity and inspires you to take action to recovery! I learned that if you want to get somewhere fast, i.e. recovering your period and healing your relationship with food, exercise and body find someone who has travelled that path before you!! This is why I am such a fan of coaches!

    More about Britney:
Brittney is a Personal Trainer based out of San Diego, CA. After spending years over-exercising, under-fueling, and losing her fertility because of hypothalamic amenorrhea, she is passionate about being a different voice in the fitness industry. Her focus is helping women redefine health, stepping back from diet culture and fitness fads, and finding what healthy truly looks and feels like to them!
Brit has since recovered from hypothalamic amenorrhea and enjoys a balanced relationship with food and exercise, while ta

Gut Directed Hypnotherapy for the Treatment of IBS and how it can be helpful for those with Hypothalamic Amenorrhea and or Eating Disorders with Bianca Skilbeck

Gut Directed Hypnotherapy for the Treatment of IBS and how it can be helpful for those with Hypothalamic Amenorrhea and or Eating Disorders with Bianca Skilbeck

Poor digestion is a common symptom in those with Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA), which is the loss of period and in those with disordered eating or eating disorders.
The main underlying driver is low energy availability. When there is a chronic energy deficiency the body responds by becoming more “energy efficient”.
The loss of period is a common and more obvious outcome for women. Stopping menstruation and fertility is a way the body responds to the stress of low energy availability. But there are many other systems of the body affected. These include poor temperature regulation, decreased bone mineral density, poor growth of hair and nails and poor or sluggish digestion. This may be experienced as frequently feeling bloated and either constipation or diarrhea.
Working with many women with HA and disordered eating and having my own journey I recognise there are many other influences on both poor digestion and recovery.
One major one in recovery is fear. Fears acting like barriers to recovery can include fear of weight gain, of eating certain foods e.g. foods high in carbs or fat, of reducing exercise volume and intensity to allow the body to heal, of losing their “fitness Identity”, letting go of all their “hard work” and of what other will think of them for example thinking they have let themselves go! Many report that they do not “trust” their appetite.
I thought this topic was an important one to cover because for many women who experience poor digestion or IBS this leads to further restrictions of certain foods, fear of foods and pushes them further away from recovery, feeling at peace with food and restoring a healthy menstrual cycle, fertility and ultimately allowing their whole body to heal!
I recently learned about gut hypnotherapy with research having some positive outcomes and today I have invited a past guest, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Counsellor Bianca Skilbeck to chat much deeper on this area.

Body Image; A Vital Piece For The Recovery Of Eating Disorders with Clinical Hypnotherapist and Counsellor Bianca Skilbeck

Body Image; A Vital Piece For The Recovery Of Eating Disorders with Clinical Hypnotherapist and Counsellor Bianca Skilbeck

Body Image is a VITAL piece in the Recovery of an Eating Disorder and Disordered Eating.
Too often it is neglected that Eating Disorders are psychological illnesses and that weight restoration does not mean full recovery. Further, people suffering from eating disorders and a poor relationship with food can live in ANY size body.
Treatment goes much deeper than just “food” and “eating” and will involve improving one's RELATIONSHIP with food, exercise and body. Recovery will involve looking at beliefs and understanding the LENS one looks through.
In this episode I have invited Bianca Skilbeck to chat further about the role of body image in eating disorders as a risk factor and also in treatment.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Diagnosis, Types and Dietary Management with Dietitian Stephanie Pirotta

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Diagnosis, Types and Dietary Management with Dietitian Stephanie Pirotta

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects 12-18% of women of reproductive age and up to 21% in some high-risk groups, such as Indigenous women. PCOS can cause irregular periods, trouble falling pregnant, acne, excess hair growth, an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and difficulty managing weight.
Hypothalamic Amenorrhea is a condition that shares some similarities with PCOS including absent or irregular periods and polycystic ovaries.
Having a special interest in this area and working with many women to recover their periods I have learned the importance of distinguishing between the two as many people with HA are misdiagnosed with PCOS. The big difference between the two is the HA is treatable whereas PCOS is about managing symptoms. The treatment for HA is about correcting the energy deficit and in many cases weight gain and reducing exercise volume and intensity to allow the body to feel it is safe and to heal. In HA, essentially the body has been forced into energy conservation mode, most often from restrictive eating. Unfortunately many people who have PCOS are told to lose weight despite a lack of evidence that weight loss diets work in the long term. There are also cases where someone may have both HA and PCOS.
In this episode I talk to fellow dietitian Stephanie Pirotta who is completing her PhD in PCOS and has great knowledge and experience in this area to help us provide more clarity on PCOS diagnosis and management.
Stephanie is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Nutritionist with a passion in women's health, particularly nutrition for Pre conception, pregnancy, PCOS and endometriosis. Stephanie is about to complete her PhD in PCOS at Monash University which focuses on developing an evidence-based, co-designed community lifestyle program for women with PCOS. To translate her research into practice she also works as a private practice dietitian at ALL FOR ONE in Yarraville Melbourne.

Someone struggling with binge eating will often experience guilt, loss of control, failure and have a belief that the answer lies in having better control and willpower!

In this episode I chat with fellow dietitian Nina Mills about what binge eating is and how we overcome it! A spoiler, it's not another diet!

Gut Health and Digestive Disorders in Eating Disorders and Hypothalamic Amenorrhea with Joanna Baker.

Gut Health and Digestive Disorders in Eating Disorders and Hypothalamic Amenorrhea with Joanna Baker.

In this episode I talk to fellow dietitian Joanna Baker who specializes in gut health to uncover the cross over between gut health and digestive function with Eating disorders and Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA).
It is common for people with HA and Eating disorders to struggle with digestion function and in this episode we explain why and the best way to treat and manage your symtoms and overall health.
Joanna also talks about the importance of gut health and your gut microbiome. The gut microbiome is like a community of healthy bacteria in your gut. We all have about 1-2kg of gut bacteria and this has a big influence of mental health, emotional health, body weight, chronic disease and immunity.
People who eat 30 or more different plants foods per week have a much more diverse gut microbiome than those that have 10 or less. Plant foods contain prebiotics which contain the fuel and nourishment for your gut bacteria. When they are fed well they will grow and thrive. Different types of bacteria are picky eaters so the more variety in the food you eat, especially plant foods the better!
Joanna Baker is a dietitian and registered nurse who loves food. Her own struggles with gut health have led her to work exclusively in food intolerance and IBS. She loves to help people enjoy food and keep their gut happy at the same time.

Love it!

I can really relate to Amy and her journey and I am so thankful I came across this podcast. Amy has really helped me find a healthier balance with food and exercise which has been a constant struggle in my life. It's also really hard to find information on HA and no one talks about it so having someone speak about so openly and honestly really helped me. Thanks Amy - can't wait for more!

One of a kind podcast!

My favourite podcast. Amy is so honest about her journey to rediscover health after years of restrictive eating and excessive exercise. She is an accredited dietitian, who is passionate about her work and in helping others have a healthy relationship with food and their bodies. She often explores hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) and provides information and tips for those in similar situations (the type of information you won't find anywhere else). Easy and enjoyable listening, which unexpectedly has me laughing out loud at some points!
Thanks for the invaluable insights Amy!!
