It is with an open heart that we introduce The Loss Mothers to you.
This project will unfold over the coming months to encompass a series of podcasts and a photographic essay that bring together the stories and experiences of mothers who have loved, lost and grieved the death of their child.
Women from all walks of life are being asked to tell their story, to share their experience of motherhood, and how the death of their child has changed their world.
We will explore the stories of mothers, young and old, who have lost babies, children and adult children. We will delve into the uniqueness of each woman's experience while coming to understand that the bonds of shared grief create universal threads that echo through time.
The aim of this project is to bear witness, gain insight, bring light and honour stories that help us to understand the complexity and depth of a mother's grief.

    Pamella & Cohen 21

    Pamella & Cohen 21

This is the story of Pamella and Cohen. Cohen was a bright, loving, honest and warm 17 year old. He had plans for the future, he had a girlfriend, was mature in talking about his feelings and his mental health with his mum and always had a 'thumbs up' for the camera.

Cohen died by suicide at home, during his mid year ATAR exams. He had battled anxiety and depression openly and honestly with his family and professional support. Sadly there was a communication breakdown at his school, his diagnosis was communicated clearly from Pamella but unclearly amongst staff. While staff and teachers came to have concerns for Cohens mental health and recognised a young male in crisis- communicated through emails - there was no communication to Cohens family- despite written discussion amongst staff that there needed to be.

Cohen's parents Pamella and Chris have continued to be Cohens biggest advocates and in turn advocates for all and are reminding us all that Suicide Prevention is Everyones Business. This is the story of Pamela and Cohen.

    Tracy & Georgia 19

    Tracy & Georgia 19

This is the story of Tracy and Georgia. Today Tracy shares with us her youngest daughter Georgia, a beautiful soul, a spark of light, a loving, fun filled, compassionate and kind person with a huge heart warming smile. Georgia's big heart enveloped her family, friends and she had a special place in there for animals too- any human or animal to experience Georgia's love was a lucky being!

Georgia had a full life and touched many people far and wide. Sadly her life ended shortly after a motor vehicle accident, with her boyfriend Josh, just before she turned 16. The circumstances surrounding the accident buried her family in another layer of grief. Tracy shares with us how the very essence of Georgia has aided and guided her through this journey of grief and life after the accident. Tracy also gives an insight into restorative justice and her experience in the Open Circle program. We hope a little of Georgia's light touches you all through Tracy.

This is the story of Tracy and Georgia.

    Danielle, Jackson & Scruff 18

    Danielle, Jackson & Scruff 18

This is the story of Danielle, Jackson & Scruff.

Danielle and Scruff are mum and dad to Jackson. In 2016 Danielle and Scruff were living a happy, full, family life. They were living in a small coastal community and were excited to be installing a pool- something they knew would bring many happy family memories. During its construction in 2016 Jackson was run over by a vehicle on their family property and sadly lost his life.

On average Driveway accidents or vehicle accidents on private property in Australia take the life of 7 children each year and seriously injure 60. The driver is often known to the family or is family and adds another devastating layer to an already immense grief.

Following Jacksons passing Danielle had grave concerns for the health and wellbeing of her husband Scruff- a previously well, healthy and vibrant man. Less than 3 months after Jackson died, Scruff made the decision to take his own life.

Danielle bravely and honestly shares her story with us today. You will hear the admiration, love and respect she has for her boys and for herself. This is the story of Danielle , Scruff and Jackson

    Amelia & Tommy 17

    Amelia & Tommy 17

This is the story of Amelia and Tommy. Amelia is mum to two sons- Aston and Tommy. Tommy was born unexpectedly and quickly at 17 weeks gestation. Amelia was able to spend some precious time with Tommy, appreciate his features, hold him, create some memories and invite a few family members to meet him- including Aston his big brother. This precious time meant a lot to Amelia and her family who are very early in their journey of grief. Amelia was gracious to speak with us about her birth experience with Tommy and what miscarriage means for her.

Miscarriage in Australia is defined as a pregnancy loss before 20 weeks gestation, this happens to 1 in 4 to 1 in 5 pregnancies. It is a grief that many women suffer in silence. A grief that sometimes is pushed to the side as an expected event for a woman to endure and often is accompanied by many unhelpful platitudes. As we go on to talk about, for some woman this may not have significant impact on their lives and for others this will be the beginning of a significant journey of grief and the alteration of life as they once knew it. Many do not get to experience holding, touching, seeing and sharing their baby but everyone who experiences miscarriage understands the emptiness left behind.

We thank Amelia for sharing her personal and family story with rawness, honestly and bravery. We know the power of story telling and we know that by sharing your grief and Tommy that you will help many others. This is not a journey any woman should feel alone in.

This episode is dedicated to little Tommy and to all the little footprints that may not have walked the earth but have left footprints on hearts across the world.

A beautiful podcast to honour children who’ve died

This is such a great podcast and handles grief and loss sensitively and allows mothered a platform to share their stories and grief in a compassionate and safe way. Be prepared for tears. A beautiful way to honour those whose lives meant so much. As a mother of a stillborn son, thank you for making this podcast.

Respectful, heartbreaking and inspiring.

In what is an incredibly difficult topic the way this podcast is presented is so respectful and the way these women talk about their experiences with loss and grief is a credit to them. I have listened to most of them so far and found it both heartbreaking and inspiring. It has also given me many moments of reflection. I hope more people take the time to listen and who may also gain something from listening.
