Batman By the Numbers: Return of the Joker (2000) Review

Batman By the Numbers: Return of the Joker (2000) Review

There’s arguably no superhero in existence that has been reimagined, redefined, or reinterpreted more than Batman.  No matter how many times he’s been rebooted, audiences are always willing to come back to Gotham City’s greatest defender.  With so much Bat content out there, there’s plenty to dissect, analyze, and of course, rank!  This podcast is dedicated to a surgical evaluation of Batman’s history, with a focus on ranking several topics in the world of Batman, among other classic Bat themes and characters.

Join host Daniel Cohen, Pop Break’s former Film Editor and Resident Bat-Maven, as he brings on several guests every month to share his passion for the one and only Dark Knight.  From Adam West to Robert Pattinson, no bat stone will be left unturned.  Bottom-line: If you’re a Batman fan, this is required listening.

We’re going back to the animated well this week, and it’s a big one!  Daniel is joined once again by the Director of Podcasting of the pop break, Alex Marcus, as the two look at the very memorable 2000 animated film, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. If you’re a fan of the 90s era animated world of Batman (who isn’t?), this is your episode.  Daniel and Alex break down their overall thoughts on Batman Beyond, discuss the iconic flashback sequence in the film that harkens back to the animated series, and yes, they open the episode by discussing the two versions of the film. Check out this link to see the video from Watchtower Database comparing the two versions, which Dan & Alex frequently mention in the episode.

The two delve deep into the character of Terry McGinnis, Tim Drake’s role in the story, and analyze the eternal battle between Batman and Joker, with Daniel coming in with a hot take on the famed flashback sequence.

While Batman Beyond is known for being set in the future of the Batman world, plenty of time is spent on what makes the Batman and Joker conflict work so well, which is front and center in this movie.

Batman Beyond.  Robin chatter.  Batman and Joker.  Is this Mark Hamill’s best turn as the Joker?  Seems like we got some vintage Batman talk on this one!  Give it a listen!

Not Couple Goals: Three Days of the Condor (1975)

Not Couple Goals: Three Days of the Condor (1975)

Welcome to “Not Couple Goals” where co-hosts Allie Nelson and Tyler McCarthy do a deep dive into a different ridiculous romantic thriller from the vantage point of their long-term relationship.

Allie, a TV writer/producer and actress, has an affinity for romantic thrillers, the more salacious the better. Tyler, an entertainment reporter and critic, often finds himself drawn in despite his better judgment. Join them as they explore all the ways it’s possible to love too hard… like WAY too hard.

In this episode, Allie and Tyler go way back to the sexy 70s for a movie that was previously mentioned in a past episode, “Three Days of the Condor” starring Robert Redford, Faye Dunaway and Max von Sydow. Join them as they toss around hypotheticals of what they would do if their lunch break at work got a lot more interesting, decide how hot a home invader (or kidnapper) would have to be for them to sleep with them and Tyler drops a “Honeymooners” reference for the kids.

Special thanks to Mallory Johns for the introduction music.

To see more of our hosts, check out Tyler’s writing at USA Insider, SYFY and NBC Insider. Find Allie’s work at Parade and Business Insider!
