Dr Ahmad Aly is the head of Upper GI Surgery at The Austin Hospital in Melbourne, a senior lecturer and researcher with Melbourne University. Uncle Andrew Gardiner is a proud descendant of the Wurundjeri clans of the Woi-wurrung people and a Muslim revert. Uncle Andrew has been a part of numerous Boards and Committees working in the service of Aboriginal communities. In sharing Uncle Andrew’s success story, we discussed the similarities between Islam and Aboriginal cultural beliefs, facing discrimination in Australia the history of Islamic voyagers who set foot on Australian soil hundreds of years before European settlement.

Sheikh Alaa has received nation-wide recognition through a Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to community harmony. He has found great success engaging the youth through soccer and the wider Australian community through open mosques.
