TPToA Podcast 353 – The New Look

TPToA Podcast 353 – The New Look

Chanel, Dior, Lagerfeld, Givenchy, Gaultier, darling. Names, names, names! Specifically, let's focus on Dior and Chanel in Apple TV+'s new series "The New Look". Christian Dior is a much-loved fashion icon, and this series opens up his portfolio and explores how French fashion houses, and names, names, NAMES survived during World War II, and what became of them in post-war Europe. Ben Mendelsohn's somewhat fragile Christian Dior is set against Juliette Binoche's exquisitely murky Coco Chanel, surrounded by other high fashion names, names, NAMES. It's an interesting background to fashion houses that have permeated the modern world, allowing us a peak behind the runway. Who were they, what choices did they make, and what did they design for the world?

In this podcast Jill guides us through the twists and turns of Parisienne haute couture, while Dion seems to be pulling stuff off the clearance rack.

The New Look depicts Christian Dior in Paris after World War II when he created his fashion line that unofficially got named the "New Look" and his professional and ideological antagonism with well-established fashion designer Coco Chanel.

The Periodic Table of Awesome Podcast - Poor Things

The Periodic Table of Awesome Podcast - Poor Things

In this show we are looking at the highly divisive film that has swept through the Oscars like dose of salts! From the mind of Yorgos Lanthimos, and based on the novel by Alasdair Gray, Poor Things proclaims itself to be a journey of growth and exploration for Bella Baxter, the nymphomaniacal Frankenstein's creature of this fantastical film. Or is it a film about the sexual abuse of a minor and the systematic reduction of her autonomy? Did we like it or loathe it? Or is it something beyond either feeling? Get watching folks. it's not an easy one to explain.

"Brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist, a young woman runs off with a lawyer on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, she grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation."

TPToA would like to invite your child-like brains and adult bodies to join in with the conversation on the Twitch stream, each week, (usually on Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEST). We extend an especially huge (and deeply weird) 'thank you' to any of you kind enough to support us by dipping into your savings for "the poors" and tossing some money into our jar via Ko-Fi, or subscribing on twitch... every dollar helps us pull ourselves up by the bootstraps into your echelons of society.

If you feel so inclined, get philanthropic with a sub! The more subs we get the more Emotes You get! Every bit of your support helps us to travel to dystopian Portugal by weird animated ships..

Don't fret if you can't be there for the recording though as you can catch them on Youtube usually later that very night. Make sure to subscribe so you don't miss them!

What changes would you like to see us make moving forward?

If you know what the: Bene Gesserit, Muad'dib, Mahdi, Fedaykin, Kwisatz Haderach, Mentats, Panoplia Propheticus, Qadis as-Salaf, Sadu and Shai-Hulud are... Then you're probably well and truly prepared for DUNE Part 2. But if that word salad made less sense than Weird Al's Dada poetry, then you may be needing to gird your loins for some LORE HEAVY SCI-FI.

In this podcast Jill is our own Benny Jesuit Mother figure, Dion is our erstwhile Moe Sizlak Haderach, and Quinny is still just a Shy Hulud with a Big... popcorn bucket.

Paul Atreides unites with Chani and the Fremen while seeking revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the universe, he must prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

A thank you to all you Fremen and Fre-women who join in on the Twitch stream, each Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEDT Plus a special thank you to those Members of the Navigators Guild who have allowed us the freedom to travel to the planet of Arrakis this show. We owe them big time for the Spice... If you want to assist us in paying them back feel free to drop some coin via our Ko-Fi jar and now also by subscribing on Twitch!

TPToA Podcast - Nobody told me it was a musical!

TPToA Podcast - Nobody told me it was a musical!

Have you ever just been watching a movie, a regular, every-day movie, and then WHAM! A song bursts in and assaults you completely unexpectedly! You are shocked, you are lying bloodied and broken, your toe tapping reflexively... You have been blindsided by a musical, and you could be entitled to compensation.  There's a strange trend in recent years of not showing any elements in the trailer that might indicate that the film is in fact a musical... Why is this?  To explore the question we have looked at a couple of recent items that have followed the trend to varying different levels of success and quality.

In this show, Dion, Peta, Jill and Quinny are the musical chorus, while the films Mean Girls and Wonka, take centre stage, and Hazbin Hotel provides the foul mouthed, animated comic relief!

    https://youtu.be/SvXYkQr1eg8

As always, a massive, musical, animated thank-you goes to our community of chorus line dancers and backup singers who join in with the conversation on the Twitch stream, live and loud each Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEST. And an especially huge thanks to any of you kind enough to support us by chucking a tip in our jar via Ko-Fi, or subscribing on twitch... every bit helps us tap dance, fosse and slut-drop into the magical podcast you know and love...

If you feel so inclined, drop us a sub! The more subs we get the more Emotes You get! Every bit of your support helps us to keep our toes tapping and our mics live.

Don't fret if you can't be there for the recording though as you can catch them on Youtube usually later that very night. Make sure to subscribe so you don't miss them!

The Periodic Table of Awful Podcast - Madame Web

The Periodic Table of Awful Podcast - Madame Web

We are rebranding ourselves for one show only to The Periodic Table of Awful. "Why?" We hear you ask? To discuss this absolute car wreck of a film!!! Madame Web; the newest entry into Sony's Spider-man adjacent universe of questionable choices, has been receiving the lowest scores of any super hero movie since Catwoman, even eclipsing the mighty Morbius. What is it then that makes it SO bad? Well Strap in folks, because we're stealing ambulances and driving through walls in an effort to unpack what went SO wrong.

We are joined by film critic Travis Johnson, along with the usual crew of clairvoyant Spider-people fresh from researching spiders in the amazon... It's Madame Jill, Evil Spiderman Dion and his weird shoe-less alter Ego from the not-future Ezekiel Quinn!

Cassandra Webb is a New York City paramedic who starts to show signs of clairvoyance. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she must protect three young women from a mysterious adversary who wants them dead.

    https://youtu.be/z7kNQb03GyY

A huge shout out to the super heroes and heroines who join in the conversation (from the future or the past) on the live-chat during the Twitch stream each and every week! Thank you for joining us each Tuesday night, and if you haven't done so before, bring your super-self on over at 7:30pm next Tuesday to get in on the action.

Special love and thanks goes to those who have financially bolstered our show with monetary support via our Ko-Fi jar and now also by subscribing on Twitch! We know you may not be a clairvoyant spider-themed paramedic with the worst sunglasses in history... but your generosity helps!

If you too have some spare filthy lucre maybe drop us a sub! The More subs we get the more Emotes You get! Every bit of your support helps us to keep the horrors of movies like this away from the door each and every day!

Don't fret if you can't be there for the recording though as you can catch them on Youtube usually later that very night. Make sure to subscribe so you don't miss them!

The Periodic Table of Awesome Podcast - Mr and Mrs Smith

Two strangers land jobs with a spy agency that offers them a life of espionage, wealth, and travel. The catch: these new identities are in an arranged marriage. Sounds familiar? well, it's been a TV series before in 1996 with Scott Bakula and Maria Bello and a Film in 2006 with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. What new insights can Donald Glover and Maya Erskine bring us? What does marriage and spying look like in 2024? Tune in and find out!

Old married Johns (spies) Dion and Quinny are on the emotional defensive from the new "Jane" in town; Jill! (Sadly Peta couldn't join us for this one so her Jane-ness is lacking this episode.)
