The AMVETS Legal Clinic is a pro-bono law clinic for military service personnel and Veterans unlike any other on the West Coast. The program provides invaluable experience to Academic Fellows and free legal representation to veterans, service members and their families.

Additionally, the Institute selects post-J.D. candidates from a competitive, nationwide pool of applicants to serve one year appointments as Academic Clinical Fellows. The Fellows litigate select cases within the AMVETS Legal Clinic, and engage in scholarly research and writing.

In just two short years the clinic has had tremendous success and has made a huge impact in the lives of military families and veterans. To date, the AMVETS Legal Clinic has recovered approximately $4.6 million in benefits, judgments and settlements for its clients.

Academic Fellows at Chapman and law school students at Berkeley handle all facets of cases under the supervision of Professors Kyndra Rotunda, Margaret Thomas, Bill Brown, Eric Eversole and Dwight Stirling. "Our law students benefit from getting to work on real cases that can change veterans' lives for the better," said Kyndra K. Rotunda, Executive Director of the Military Law Institute and Associate Professor of Military and International Law.

The AMVETS Legal Clinic augments representation provided by the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps, which is barred from representing soldiers in private civil legal claims. The AMVETS Legal Clinic focuses on assisting with the following types of matters: Traumatic Service Group Life Insurance (TSGLI) appeals, discharge upgrade applications, Veterans benefits appeals, and basic civil legal claims such as a landlord tenant dispute.
