Heartbreakingly, all humanity has a long track record of rejecting those sent by God to guide, counsel, exhort, or rule. When God shows up in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, the rightful and true King, offering citizenship and life in His invading kingdom, humanity behaves no differently. Instead of receiving His reign, they put their King on trial and cried for his crucifixion. This ultimately forces every one of us to ask ourselves how we’d fill in the blank when we say, “NO KING BUT ______________."

Just before Jesus goes to the cross to offer up His life for us, He goes to the Father to pray for “those who believe in me through the [disciples] word.” Church… Jesus prayed for you, and His prayerful concerns were less about what we’d DO and more about who we’d BE. As Jesus’ disciples sent into this world that is still ruled over by the evil one, we face all kinds of threats to our faith and mission, most of which we don’t even see or know of. When Jesus was leaving, He prayed to His father for His disciples, making two requests to His Father that He has answered and still answers today: “Holy Father, protect them… sanctify them."
