When I married into the British Aristocracy it was the start of a wonderfully exciting journey, if a little daunting. I became a Viscountess – and for an American girl from a small town outside Chicago, it was quite a shock. I live with my husband, Luke – heir to the Earl of Sandwich- and our family at Mapperton House in Dorset.  Mapperton is a glorious sandstone house house dating originally from the 1540’s. It is known as Britain’s Finest Manor House and is filled with wonderful treasures collected by Luke’s ancestors.  Living in a place like this is a joy and but also a challenge and every day we’re aware that we are preserving a very special part of Britain’s heritage.  Mapperton has opened up an extraordinary new world for me and I can’t wait to share it with you all – so if you love castles and manors and stately homes as much as I do, please join me as I head off to some of the Britains most spectacular historic homes …On these trips, I’ll be meeting other owners who live and manage these large houses and estates as well as some of the fantastic people who work there too. With them I’ll be exploring the history, the landscapes, the innovations of generations past and present.  I’ll be sure to roll up my sleeves and help with a few jobs along the way.So please join this American Viscountess as I journey into the countryside in search of some of Britain’s Finest Historic Houses.

WORLD’S FIRST SOLAR POWERED CASTLE | How They Did It | Athelhampton

Athelhampton House in Dorset is the focus of this NEW episode of historic house visits here on the American Viscountess channel. Living in and maintaining these homes is both a wonderful privilege and an enormous challenge. And one of the greatest tasks every house owner faces is heating a centuries old building in a sustainable and economical way. Giles Keating at Athelhampton has faced this challenge in a totally pioneering and ingenious way!

A Tour of Our Family's Town! - One of Britain's Oldest Shipyards | Palace House Beaulieu finale

A Tour of Our Family's Town! - One of Britain's Oldest Shipyards | Palace House Beaulieu finale

In this episode, I’m visiting Bucklers Hard on the Beaulieu estate – just a short distance from Palace House, Beulieu Abbey and the National Motor Museum. The first Earl of Sandwich, the branch of the Montagu family which I married into, is known worldwide because he was head of the Admiralty and brought King Charles II back from exile. But it’s now wonderful for me to visit Beaulieu and discover the rich maritime links of another branch of the Montagu family.
I’ll be meeting with the Hon. Mary Montagu-Scott who has a lifelong passion for the maritime history of Beaulieu and is a keen sailor. Mary shows me the replica timber framed shipwrights workshop which she masterminded. And my husband Luke and I will be cheering on our 17 year old son, William as he and Mary set sail on the Beaulieu river.

How KING HENRY VIII Demolished this ROYAL ABBEY - Palace House, Beaulieu part 3

How KING HENRY VIII Demolished this ROYAL ABBEY - Palace House, Beaulieu part 3

Not only is Beaulieu home to the National Motor Museum, but also to the extraordinary ruins of Beaulieu Abbey, which date back to the foundation of the monastery here in the thirteenth century. The more I visit historic houses around Britain, the more I realise how many of them have monastic roots. In this episode, Lord Montagu guides me around some of the surviving buildings and shows me the exquisite wall hangings, stitched by his mother, which chart the history of the abbey. I also explore a hidden part of the Beaulieu estate where the well used by the monks still survives today. And I end my visit at the newly restored ice house – a glimpse back to the days when historic houses functioned more like life in the tv series, Downton Abbey.
