Епископската базилика на Филипопол, античният предшественик на днешния Пловдив, е най-голямата раннохристиянска църква в България. Базиликата е сред първите, построени в Римската империя след легализирането на християнството през 313 г.
Тя заема централно място и в съвременен Пловдив, тъй като се намира в близост до централния площад и католическата катедрала „Св. Лудвиг“, превръщайки се в пример за приемствеността на духовните идеи, които се предават от поколение на поколение през вековете.
Проектът за консервация, реставрация, експониране и изграждане на защитно покритие е едно от най-важните начинания за Община Пловдив през 2019 г. - годината, в която градът е Европейска столица на културата. За осъществяването на проекта Общината си партнира с Министерство на културата и Фондация „Америка за България“.
Благодарение на инициативността на Фондация “Америка за България” и Община Пловдив кандидатурата на Епископската базилика и римското мозаечно наследство на Филипопол е включена в Индикативния списък на ЮНЕСКО за значими културни и природни обекти.

The Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis, the predecessor of today’s Plovdiv, is the largest Early Christian temple in Bulgaria. The basilica was among the first to be erected in the Roman Empire after Christianity was legalized, in 313.
The Bishop’s Basilica of ancient Philippopolis has a central location in modern Plovdiv as well. It is near the central square and the St. Ludwig Catholic Cathedral, providing an everlasting example for the continuity of spiritual ideas that the various generations have handed down through the centuries.
The conservation, restoration, display and protective cover project is one of the most important initiatives of Plovdiv Municipality in 2019 as the city is the European Capital of Culture. To complete the Bishop’s Basilica, the municipality is partnering with the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Tourism and America for Bulgaria Foundation.
Thanks to the efforts and the initiatives of the America for Bulgaria Foundation and the Plovdiv Municipality, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) approved the inclusion of the Bishop’s Basilica and the Roman mosaic heritage of Philippopolis on Bulgaria’s Tentative List of significant cultural and natural sites.
