God’s presence was not in wind or earthquake or fire. His voice came in the gentle breeze. Those sweet zephyrs were like windswept, invisible magnets, drawing Elijah out of the cave.

For several years Elijah had stood firm amidst and against almost insurmountable odds and circumstances. But now, after a great victory, he dropped into the throes of discouragement and total despair.

No wonder Elijah is the kind of man we admire. Isn’t it exciting to know we serve the same God he served? Isn’t it thrilling to think we can trust the same God he trusted? And what kind of God is that? He’s the God who makes promises and keeps them.

The contrast is stunning. And the response was immediate: It was a consuming fire . . . and it was convincing.
