Rush Hour (1998) with Steve and Randy from 'The Decision Reel'

Rush Hour (1998) with Steve and Randy from 'The Decision Reel'

Randy and Steve from The Decision Reel podcast return to continue the buddy cop films they and Sean seem to have fallen into discussing.

They review Rush Hour (1998), a film in which "the fastest hands in the East meet the biggest mouth in the West".

    Discussion Points:
-The Rush Hour films are in Randy's blood.
    -Sean's notes are atrocious again.
-Sean derails a very serious discussion with a comparison to the Bean film (1997).
-Steve tries to pump up his and Randy's appearances on Review It Yourself.
-Sean confuses Chris Penn and Chris Farley.
-The brilliant chemistry between Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan.
-The late, great Phil Baker Hall. You probably won't know the name, but you'll recognise his face.
-Randy dulls the pain of the conversation with Bourbon on the Rocks.

    Raised Questions:
    -Is station pretentious or prestigious?
-Why does Steve always shout-out names?
    -Does Steve like Chris Tucker?
-Could you make this film today?
-Did Sean put you to sleep with his history trivia?
-Had you ever heard of Michael Penn?
-Have you ever had room-temperature Bourbon "just to see"?

Randy and Steve will be back to review Rush Hour 2 (2001). Then Shanghai Noon (2000) and Shanghai Knights (2003).

The Shyamalan Showdown! Part One (1992-2006) with Dmitry from 'The Psych Effect Podcast' and Sarah from 'Weird Horizon'

The Shyamalan Showdown! Part One (1992-2006) with Dmitry from 'The Psych Effect Podcast' and Sarah from 'Weird Horizon'

Dmitry from 'The Psych Effect Podcast' and Sarah from 'Weird Horizon' join Sean to discuss the films of M. Night Shyamalan.

    Warning: Spoilers!

Sean introduces The Shyamalan Speed Round game on his unsuspecting guests.

    We discuss:

    -The Sixth Sense (1999).

    -Unbreakable (2000).

    -Signs (2002).

    -The Village (2004).

    -Lady in the Water (2006).

    Raised Questions:

-How many different noises can Dmitry use to show his disgust and distain?

-Did The Sixth Sense set the bar too high, and did that work against him?

-Does Shyamalan try to be too dramatic or meaningful?

-Did Unbreakable (2000) suffer from being released so soon after The Sixth Sense (1999)?

-Did X-Men (2000) affect the reception to Unbreakable?

-Do you love or loathe Signs (2002)?

    -What's the message?

-Which film copped out more, Signs (2002) or I Am Legend (2008)?

-Do we need to bring in alien HR?

-How did Lady in the Water (2006) end a relationship?

-Is the twist ending of The Village (2004) plausible?

-Is Shyamalan's biggest weakness also his biggest strength?

    Notes:

-No dogs were harmed for real Signs (2002).The dog death in the film is not real. Review It Yourself advocates only the best of care for animals.

-Bryce Dallas Howard was just 25 when she was in Lady in the Water (2006)!

    Quotes:

    -"What's the message Sean?".

-"This film didn't cop out? Come on man".

-"I've never heard an American so negative, I love it".

    -"Swing away Merrill".

-How does a shark sneak in a corridor and turn on an oven?

-Did you want the omelette recipe?

-How uneven is the shift rota?

The Guns of Navarone (1961) with Mark

The Guns of Navarone (1961) with Mark

Sean is joined by his mate Mark to discuss one of Mark's favourite films: The Guns of Navarone (1961); One of the best adventure films ever made.

    It gets very philosophical.

    Discussion Points:

-Mark was also introduced to older films by his Dad.

-The strength of every single character.

-Mark was impressed by the set-up of the film.

-The brilliant scene with the exhausted, battered Royal Air Force (RAF) Bomber Command pilots.

-The lack of vilification for those making the difficult, near-impossible decisions in wartime.

-The challenge of having morals in war.

-The Oscar-winning special effects and how well they hold up.

-The personal conflict between the characters, particularly Mallory and Franklin.

-Sean's terrible note-taking returns (because he enjoys the film so much).

-The myth of the 'clean' Wehrmacht.

-The sheer insanity of war and the sheer insanity of trying to apply rules to it.

    -The iconic traitor scene.

-Dispensing with airs and graces in wartime.

-Sean prefers matte paintings to terrible CGI.

-The best lift scene in cinema.

    -Surprising Wallace and Gromit trivia.

-The bittersweet climax of the film.

    Raised Questions:

-Does your Dad influence your taste in films?

-What happened to writing in films?

-Why did they 'bin off' the first Director?

-Why Stanley Baker took such a small part?

-Did you know they cast a pop singer?

-Can you win the war but lose yourself in the process?

-Can the whole machine function with a faulty piece?

-What is one of the most over-used sounds in film history?

-Who stepped on the Birthday Cake?

-Did you know 'rat' incendiaries were actually used in the Second World War?

-Why don't they make films like this anymore?

    Mark's Recommendations:

-Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022).

    -Pork Chop Hill (1959).

    Shout-outs:

    -The Decision Reel podcast.
