The Surpassing Worth of Knowing Christ – Philippians 3:1-11

    Sermon Details:

Pastor Andrew Vanofwegen of Mississauga Vietnamese Alliance Church preached this sermon on October 17, 2021.

    Scripture Passage:

    Philippians 3:1-11 (ESV)

    Righteousness Through Faith in Christ

3 Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you.

2 Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. 3 For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh— 4 though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. 7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

    A Pleading God – Hosea 2:2-13

    A Pleading God – Hosea 2:2-13

    Sermon Details:

Rev. Tim Grieves preached this sermon on October 10, 2021.

    Scripture Passage:

    Hosea 2:2-13 (ESV)

2 “Plead with your mother, plead—    for she is not my wife,    and I am not her husband—that she put away her whoring from her face,    and her adultery from between her breasts;3 lest I strip her naked    and make her as in the day she was born, and make her like a wilderness,    and make her like a parched land,    and kill her with thirst.4 Upon her children also I will have no mercy,    because they are children of whoredom.5 For their mother has played the whore;    she who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, ‘I will go after my lovers,    who give me my bread and my water,    my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.’6 Therefore I will hedge up her way with thorns,    and I will build a wall against her,    so that she cannot find her paths.7 She shall pursue her lovers    but not overtake them, and she shall seek them    but shall not find them. Then she shall say,    ‘I will go and return to my first husband,    for it was better for me then than now.’8 And she did not know    that it was I who gave her    the grain, the wine, and the oil,and who lavished on her silver and gold,    which they used for Baal.9 Therefore I will take back    my grain in its time,    and my wine in its season, and I will take away my wool and my flax,    which were to cover her nakedness.10 Now I will uncover her lewdness    in the sight of her lovers,    and no one shall rescue her out of my hand.11 And I will put an end to all her mirth,    her feasts, her new moons, her Sabbaths,    and all her appointed feasts.12 And I will lay waste her vines and her fig trees,    of which she said,‘These are my wages,    which my lovers have given me.’I will make them a forest,    and the beasts of the field shall devour them.13 And I will punish her for the feast days of the Baals    when she burned offerings to themand adorned herself with her ring and jewelry,    and went after her lovers    and forgot me, declares the Lord.

Turn From Spiritual Adultery – Hosea 1:1-2:1

Turn From Spiritual Adultery – Hosea 1:1-2:1

    Sermon Details:

Rev. Tim Grieves preached this sermon on October 3, 2021.

    Scripture Passage:

    Hosea 1:1-2:1 (ESV)

1 The word of the Lord that came to Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

    Hosea’s Wife and Children

2 When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, “Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom, for the land commits great whoredom by forsaking the Lord.” 3 So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

4 And the Lord said to him, “Call his name Jezreel, for in just a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. 5 And on that day I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel.”

6 She conceived again and bore a daughter. And the Lord said to him, “Call her name No Mercy, for I will no more have mercy on the house of Israel, to forgive them at all. 7 But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God. I will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen.”

8 When she had weaned No Mercy, she conceived and bore a son. 9 And the Lord said, “Call his name Not My People, for you are not my people, and I am not your God.”

10  Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered. And in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” it shall be said to them, “Children of the living God.” 11 And the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint for themselves one head. And they shall go up from the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

    Israel’s Unfaithfulness Punished

2  Say to your brothers, “You are my people,” and to your sisters, “You have received mercy.”

Whose Plan Is It Anyway? – 1 Kings 19:1-18

Whose Plan Is It Anyway? – 1 Kings 19:1-18

    Sermon Details:

Rev. Andrew Archibald from Fairview Baptist Church in Linsdsay, ON, preached this sermon on September 26, 2021.

    Scripture Passage:

    1 Kings 19:1-18 (ESV)

    Elijah Flees Jezebel

19 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.” 3 Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.” 5 And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6 And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again. 7 And the angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.” 8 And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God.

    The Lord Speaks to Elijah

9 There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10 He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” 11 And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.[a] 13 And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14 He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” 15 And the Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. 16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place. 17 And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put to death. 18 Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal,

    Scripture Passage:

    2 Samuel 24:22-24 (ESV)

22 Then Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him. Here are the oxen for the burnt offering and the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood. 23 All this, O king, Araunah gives to the king.” And Araunah said to the king, “May the Lord your God accept you.” 24 But the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

    Scripture Passage:

    Philippians 3:12-14 (ESV)

12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
