    50. Door (1988) / Sabaku (2000)

    50. Door (1988) / Sabaku (2000)

It’s our 50th episode, and, to celebrate this milestone, we’re discussing the two movies that inspired this podcast: DOOR and SABAKU!

When we first started this podcast, Banmei Takahashi’s DOOR was a brutally underseen, almost forgotten film. Now, thanks to Third Window Films, it has had a second life! Guy unpacks the story of its production company and his own introduction to the film.

We then take a hard violent turn with SABAKU, a vicious queer pinku from the early 2000s. This film has always been shrouded in mystery. Dave digs deep into secrets, focusing on its oddly named director, ”Casino”, and its connection to podcast favourite, Hisaysu Sato.

    49. Talk to Me, Dicky! (1992)

    49. Talk to Me, Dicky! (1992)

Dave shows Guy TALK TO ME, DICKY! from 1992, written and directed by its star Alfred Cheung, a very familiar face to those who enjoy 90s Hong Kong cinema. This film has one of the most jaw-dropping narratives of anything we’ve covered. Just look at this plot synopsis:

”A policeman learns to talk to his penis (which can talk to other men’s penises) and his penis helps him investigate a rape case.”

And yet, despite the wild levels of silliness, we somehow go to some very dark places in this episode, from Hong Kong-Mainland relations to post-Tiananmen Square trauma.

    48. Issei Sagawa's I Want To Eat (1994)

    48. Issei Sagawa's I Want To Eat (1994)

Guy shows Dave I WANT TO EAT from 1994, written by and starring Issei Sagawa, the Kobe Cannibal. This movie is among the bleakest and grossest things we’ve ever covered. Guy digs deep into the horrible history of Sagawa from his murder and cannibalism of Renée Hartevelt in Paris to his starring role in an AV film, uncovering amazing and unsettling facts along the way. The film itself is a bizarre nightmarish amalgamation of documentary footage, pornographic scenes, and strange gory reenactments. This is about as wrong as it gets...

    47. Big Money Rustlas (2010)

    47. Big Money Rustlas (2010)

Dave shows Guy BIG MONEY RUSTLAS and nearly ends their friendship. This is a Western from 2010 starring Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope of the Insane Clown Posse. It is a carnival of bad jokes, clown makeup, Jason Mewes pissing his pants, and horse-punching. Featuring some truly baffling cameos from Vanilla Ice to Tom Sizemore to Screech from SAVED BY THE BELL. Dave shares his personal history as an teenage juggalo, and Guy comes close to a full mental breakdown. Whoop whoop?
