"Every day since Dieppe has been a gift" Feat: Mike Harrington
Mike Harrington tells the incredible story of his father's life. Growing up in Cardiff Wales, posing as an orphan to gain passage to Canada as an economic migrant to seek out his fortune and arriving in Canada on Black Friday Oct 25th 1929, the day of the Wall Street Crash.
Mike's dad became a sharp shooter and a prize fighter at country fairs taking on men up to two times his weight and never losing a bout. He went on to join the war effort and trained to become an explosive expert in the commando units in Britain.
He was seriously wounded in 1942 at the disastrous landing at Dieppe and spent the rest of the war escaping five times from German POW camps. Years later on his death bed he said to his friend, "don't cry for me, every day after Dieppe has been a gift." -
