287 - Mindfulness: It’s Not What You Think with Harvard Researcher Dr. Ellen Langer

287 - Mindfulness: It’s Not What You Think with Harvard Researcher Dr. Ellen Langer

In today's episode, we welcome Dr. Ellen Langer, a pioneering researcher and the first woman to become a tenured professor of psychology at Harvard University. Often referred to as the "mother of mindfulness," Dr. Langer has spent over four decades revolutionizing our understanding of the mind-body connection.

The bestselling author of books like "Mindfulness," "The Power of Mindful Learning," and "Counterclockwise," Dr. Langer presents ideas from her latest work, "The Mindful Body," revealing how our mindset can significantly impact our physical health and offering practical advice for leading a more conscious and intentional life.

Join us as Dr. Langer discusses her groundbreaking research, the extraordinary potential of mindfulness, and how embracing this approach can be a catalyst for profound personal transformation. This conversation is packed with insights that could change the way you think about health and well-being!

“When you have a notion of dualism, mind and the body, the main problem is how do you get from this fuzzy thing called thought to something material called the body? And without figuring that out, research had been sort of stalled for centuries. And then I started to think about it and I realized, well, mind, body, these are just words. And that if we put the mind and the body back together and see it as a single unit, then wherever we're putting the mind, we're necessarily putting the body. And you realize of all the things you can think about, the amount of control you have over your health becomes enormous.” - Dr. Ellen Langer

What we discuss in this episode:
    - The astonishing findings of the Counterclockwise experiment and their implications.
    - How satiation and fatigue are primarily psychological constructs.
    - What mindfulness is and how to practice it.
    - The difference between mindfulness and meditation.
    - Overcoming limitations.
    - The impact of changing perceptions of aging on our biological age.
    - Stress and mindfulness.
    - How practicing mindfulness can alter others' perceptions of you in a positive way.

“The root cause of type two diabetes, despite what people think, it's not sugar or carbs; it's actually fat. Insulin is like a key that unlocks a door in our muscle cells primarily so we can store sugar in the form of glycogen and use that for physical activity. And when we get too much fat in the muscle cells, eating this kind of standard Western diet – meat, dairy heavy – some of that fat ends up in the muscle. So it clogs up, jams up the lock from the inside so that insulin can't unlock the door, and so your sugar levels start to go up. And over time, that puts more and more strain on our pancreas, which is the organ that makes insulin, and so we start out with this insulin-resistant state, prediabetes metabolic syndrome, and then that progresses over time through to type two diabetes.” - Dr. Jim Loomis

What we discuss in this episode:
    - The health risks associated with cooking oils and Caryn’s practical tips for oil-free cooking.
    - Grilled meat and carcinogenic compounds.
    - The critical role of fiber in your diet. Dr. Loomis’s daily fiber recommendations.
    - Caryn’s practical tips for boosting fiber intake in your daily meals.
    - Techniques to enhance the flavor of your dishes without relying on excessive salt.
    - Food recommendations for optimal health.
    - The truth about lectins and phytates.

285 - How to Be an Impactful Vegan with Bodybuilder and Author Robert Cheeke

285 - How to Be an Impactful Vegan with Bodybuilder and Author Robert Cheeke

In this episode, we are joined by Robert Cheeke, the trailblazing "godfather of vegan bodybuilding," New York Times bestselling author, and advocate for compassionate living. With his infectious enthusiasm and dedication, Robert discusses his altruism and his new book, "The Impactful Vegan," which provides practical advice for anyone aiming to make the most impact on behalf of animals and the planet.

“Yes, there's a diversity of approaches that are good to help reduce animal suffering, but some are just quantifiably more effective than others. And if we can put our time and energy into those that are more effective, then that's what effective altruism aims to achieve. And that's what I've discovered through my efforts as well. I identify with being an effective altruist, you know, long before that term was invented about 12 years ago. Of course, I didn't know the term for it, but that's how I lived my life. For the most part, probably for the last 30 years, was how can I do the most good to help those around me.” - Robert Cheeke

What we discuss in this episode:
    - The motivation driving "The Impactful Vegan" and Robert’s aspirations for its impact.
    - Effective altruism.
    - The value of embracing imperfection as a vegan.
    - Enhancing your positive impact through the support of international organizations.
    - Optimal vegan advocacy strategies and discerning ineffective approaches.
    - The importance of listening and leading by positive example.

284 - Are Your Clothes Killing You? With Fashion Designer Lydia Wendt

284 - Are Your Clothes Killing You? With Fashion Designer Lydia Wendt

In a world where petrochemicals and other toxins pervade our clothing and impact our health, we’re thrilled to welcome Lydia Wendt, the visionary Founder and Design Director of California Cloth Foundry, to the show. Throughout her remarkable career, Lydia has worked with iconic designers and brands like Tom Ford, Calvin Klein, and Jones New York. A true pioneer in regenerative fashion, she launched CCF in 2014 to revolutionize the fashion industry through eco-friendly and ethical practices. Tune in to hear about Lydia’s inspiring journey, her innovative approaches to creating sustainable clothing, and practical tips to protect yourself and your loved ones from the dangers of conventional fashion.

“I was working towards a sustainable fashion job and, you know, moving my career because I had a boatload of knowledge about the toxins and about what we were doing contributing to the rise of fast fashion. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I had my second child, and I was breastfeeding her when I was diagnosed. That was the turning point where I not only dove into sustainable fashion but also knowing that there were environmental impacts and reasons why, as a young mom, I was diagnosed with breast cancer when that's not really an average age. I knew it was environmental, but I also wanted to know whether it had something to do with clothing in the supply chain.” - Lydia Wendt

What we discuss in this episode:
    - Microplastics and dangerous chemicals lurking in places you might not expect.
    - Why 100% cotton clothing might not be as safe as you think.
    - Lydia’s career turning point.
    - What differentiates CCF from other clothing brands?
    - What petrochemicals are doing to our waterways?
    - How the rise in fast fashion is causing a rise in toxicity.
    - The difference between slow, fast, and natural fashion.
    - How to get safe, quality clothes on a budget.

283 - How Veganism Improves Your Life with NBA Coach Joseph Blair

283 - How Veganism Improves Your Life with NBA Coach Joseph Blair

Today, we host a trailblazer in the world of sports and mentorship. With a professional basketball career that spanned the planet –  including a stint with the Harlem Globetrotters and a Euroleague MVP award – Joseph Blair, also known as The Vegan Coach, brings experience and wisdom to his role as assistant coach for the Washington Wizards.

Off the court, Joseph champions a plant-based lifestyle for its health benefits and its impact on the environment and animal welfare. He is outspoken and passionate, and that is reshaping how fans and athletes think about veganism.

And be sure to check out his Instagram page to watch "The Vegan Diaries," where he takes you to vegan restaurants at home, around the country when he travels with the Wizards, and abroad.

Join us as we learn more about Coach Joseph Blair, from his journey to plant-based living to his insights on how to inspire people, whether it’s to play better ball or to eat vegan.

“So to hate something enough to slaughter it, devour it, that's the next level of hate that we're taught. That is something that's taught by parents who say here, take that chicken and eat it. Why? Because the chicken's life means less than your life does. So it doesn't matter. We are the superior beings. We can overpower it. But isn't that the same thing with people when it comes down to racism, sexism, and anti-Semitism and that exact same thinking that is literally destroying our planet and our communities as a whole? So if we can alleviate that thinking completely, it has to start with our diet.” - Coach Joseph Blair

What we discuss in this episode:
    - Insights from Coach Blair’s time with the Harlem Globetrotters.
    - His journey to becoming vegan.
    - The transformative power of conscious living.
    - Coach Blair’s diet and fasting practices.
    - How Coach Blair discusses veganism with his players.
    - The food culture within the NBA: what players and coaches eat, including on the road.
    - The inspiration behind "The Vegan Diaries."
    - Tips from Coach Blair for aspiring vegans or those curious about adopting a vegan lifestyle.
