Penn State football’s first official visit weekend starts this Friday, May 31. But even before his first chance to host his top targets in an official capacity, wide receiver’s coach Marques Hagans is on the hot seat with many fans. The team’s struggles to generate separation and a consistent passing game in 2023 tanked the team’s best chance to defeat Ohio State and led to another low-wattage performance against Michigan.
But this is the first year that Hagans will have a chance to develop relationships with and recruit players that fit his vision and style for the team. But by now, we have a much better idea of what that style of player looks like.

Tyseer Denmark and a Big 33 Recap
The Pennsylvania squad dominated the annual Big 33 game this past weekend, winning 31-7, scoring all of their points in the first half. Four-star Penn State led that scoring barrage commit Tyseer Denmark, who had three touchdowns on four targets in the game.
We’ll discuss what we learned from that performance and how Denmark showed some skills at a new position that we hadn’t seen before. We’ll also review the day of Kenny Woseley, who played cornerback for the Pennsylvania team.

The Penn State Nittany Lions football team departs on its next quest for a postseason berth this fall in a new, unexplored 12-team playoff. Many situations, players, and decisions will affect the ultimate outcome, but not all in the way. On today's BWI Live Football Show, we're discussing those things that hold an oversized place in our minds about the upcoming season.

Fitz's Recruiting Update

The Big 33 All-Star game between Pennsylvania and Maryland happened last weekend, with three future Penn State football players competing. The star of the event was Nittany Lions commit Tyseer Denmark, who had three touchdowns in the standout performance. What did BWI Publisher Sean Fitz take from the game? He highlights Denmark, run-on Aaron Enterline, and defenisve back commit Kenny Woseley on today's feature.

From there, we discuss the Penn State wide receiver room further and try to properly contextualize the role that Denmark or fellow freshman Peter Gonzalez can have on the 2024 season.

Penn State news updates

We start this week's news update by reviewing the Penn State Board of Trustees meeting from last Tuesday. The board overwhelmingly voted to fund the renovations to the stadium last week, which we previewed before the event. However, we're reviewing the arguments made during the meeting for the positive and negative votes. We also take a question from the chat about preserving the ambiance of Penn State's home field while providing a modern and luxurious experience.

Next, we review the civil suit by former Penn State team doctor Scott Lynch. Dr. Lynch sued the university for what he alleged was a retaliatory firing by the program. We discuss the prosecution's claims and preview what the defense is likely to counter with.

Most Overrated Storylines for the upcoming season

Today's main topic surrounds the overrated ideas and narratives about the team's performance this fall. Is Abdul Carter's move to the defensive end a major negative impact on the linebackers? Will he be a game-changer as an edge rusher? We debate if those topics are overrated in the conversation about this upcoming season.

Next, we discuss the third rail of the Penn State offense. We all agree that the Lion's passing attack is a key issue for the team this fall. However, we debate the idea that Drew Allar has to be an elite quarterback for the offense to function better than it did last year. Is that true? Or is it overrated?

It’s been a busy week of Penn State football recruiting. The Elite 11 regional in State College and the Baltimore Under Armour Camp featured some of the region’s top talent at every position this past weekend. The Nittany Lions had top targets at each camp and Blue White Illustrated was at both to see how things played out. We’re diving deep into those performances today on the BWI Live Show. Penn State gets Official Visit from Porter

Porter is widely regarded as the team’s top wide receiver target in the region, if not overall. So, how and when did Penn State land an official visit for the 6-3 wide receiver? Ryan Snyder broke down the news on the site earlier this week and discussed the situation on today’s show.

Meanwhile, Sean Fitz took a deep dive into the team’s three running back recruits in the 2025 class. What did he find, and what new information did he gather this week? He’ll highlight some of that on today’s show, but for the full details, check out his article.

–Penn State names Nick Lee it’s new assistant coach. He replaces Jimmy Kennedy. What can the multi-time NCAA champ bring to the Lions? Is he ready for this role? Will he still compete.

–Former Nittany Lions continues to move around the coaching ranks. Vincenzo Joseph left Stanford to be the North Carolina Olympic Regional Training Center head coach. Mark Hall left Penn for an off-mat job at Oklahoma. And, Lions alum Bryan Pearsall is joining David Taylor’s staff at Oklahoma State as the recruiting coordinator.

–Final Class of 2024 rankings are out from MatScouts. Penn State commit Luke Lilledahl is No. 1 in the pound-for-pound rankings. He could start this year at 125 pounds. Wisconsin upperweight Connor Mirasola is No. 5. New York’s Zack Ryder, who could compete at 174/184, is No. 6. 165-pound Pa., native Joe Sealey is No. 8. Heavyweight Cole Mirasola is No. 14. And middle weight Brock Weiss is No. 91. PSU only team with multiple top 10 members.

The final Elite 11 regional took place in State College for the second year last Sunday. On today’s BWI Live Show, we’re discussing the top Penn State quarterback prospects who attended the event. Penn State quarterback targets at Elite 11
For the first time in two years, a Penn State quarterback commit didn’t make the Elite 11 finals. After Jaxon Smolik and Ethan Grunkmeyer secured spots in the elite quarterback camp the previous two cycles, three-star commit Bekkem Kritza didn’t make the cut.

But how did he stack up with the group and how close was he to making the list? We were at the event on Sunday and give you a recap of what he did and how he performed compared to the top group of elite quarterback commits.

Also, Penn State’s top target did make the finals. Spring-Ford quarterback Matt Zollers was one of two passers, including one-time target Ryan Montgomery, who secured the final two spots in the competition after the camp. We’ll discuss what separated them from Kritza and how the upside of Penn State’s committed player compares to the more polished prospects at the camp.

Redshirt freshman report

Finally, we’ll end the show discussing the notable Penn State redshirt freshmen heading into the 2024 season. While the top young players who contribute and burn their redshirts get all the attention, what about the other players heading into their second year with the organization?
