ALL MARINE RADIO Michael F. McNamara

At 10:09 PM on June 6th of 2022, I received a long email from a guy named Wade Cates.  At 11:15 PM, I woke up, read the email, and told him to call me if he was still awake. We spoke the next day.

Wade is a former Marine NCO, he drives a semi-truck for a living… hauling a lot of steel between Jackson, Tennessee, Birmingham, Alabama, and Savannah, Georgia. He is rightly proud of his beautiful family and more than loves a good cigar.

The story that you will hear Wade tell is not an easy one to listen to; it’s the story of Juan’s suicide and just some of what his family has dealt with in the aftermath. But in that story, I know you will hear Wade’s depth, his resolve to exit the Valley of the Shadow of Death with his family and ultimately live a great life.

I am proud to call him my friend.

Karl Marlantes needs no introduction to most Marines… but in case you don’t know him, here is a brief rundown of who he is from Wikipedia:

Karl Arthur Marlantes (born December 24, 1944) is an American author and Vietnam War veteran. He has written three books: Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War (2010), What it is Like to go to War (2011), and Deep River (2019).

Early life

Marlantes grew up in Seaside, Oregon, a small, coastal logging town.[3][4] He played football and was student body president at Seaside High School, from which he graduated in 1963.[5] His father was the school principal.[6]

He won a National Merit Scholarship and attended Yale University, where he was a member of Jonathan Edwards College and Beta Theta Pi,[7] and played as wing forward in the rugby team.[8] During his time at Yale, Marlantes trained in the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Class.[9] He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship at University College, Oxford.[10] He returned to Oxford after his military service and earned a master’s degree.

Vietnam War

Marlantes left after one semester at Oxford to join active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps as an infantry officer. He served during the a title="Vietnam War" href="https://en.wikipedia.

CWO4 Woody Williams, USMC (ret) is a Marine Corps legend.  He was the recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions against Japanese forces on the island of Iwo Jima and was the last surviving Marine Corps World War II Medal of Honor recipient.  He joined ALL MARINE RADIO at the Marine Corps Marathon to discuss his participation in the 2018 Marine Corps Marathon as well as the work his foundation, the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation does to support the construction of memorials to Gold Star Families around the nation.
