Tanner '88 (Pt. 1)
We're kicking off our three-part mini-series on the Altman HBO series TANNER '88!
We get into Doonesbury, talk about presidents, the 90s handheld camera vibe, smoking indoors, and we reveal our favorite Beatle.
Enjoy!! -
The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (1988)
It's our last movie of the 80s, and Bob's final TV movie. We also compare this with the 2023 adaptation by William Friedkin, talk about him and Altman's careers, court room thrillers, military jargon, naval ships, Eric Bogosian's incredible acting. This one's got it all! Salute bobbleheadsMusic:

Beyond Therapy (1987)
We've dragged our feet long enough, but it's time for us to get into Altman's final movie from the year 1987. After all these surprise hits in the 80s Bob era, we finally hit a big old goose egg, and it's Beyond Therapy.
We get into Altman and Christopher Durang's differing scripts, Jeff Goldblum being bad at improv, 80s yuppie freaks, and we try to figure out who is to blame for this movie. We have a lot of laughs though and make a good time out of it, so listen in because this one's a doozy! -
Basements (1987)
It's TV movie week as we look into the 1987 2-parter BASEMENTS, Altman's adapted version of two Harold Pinter works.
We get into John Travolta's British accent, Tom Conti's voice, Linda Hunt's voice, it's a voice heavy episode! We talk Harold Pinter and have a fun time dissecting these two strange but interesting stories. Check this one out sometime! It's a fascinating watch and available on the Internet Archive -
O.C. and Stiggs (1987)
Huge episode this week! We're talking about Bob's 1987 (filmed in 1983) movie, OC AND STIGGS. A crazy teen-movie satire that was way ahead of its time in the stuff it was even satirizing - that's the power of BOB (get it, its like a reference to 80s movie back to the future).
Seriously though, we have to thank Hunter Stephenson very much for their article '"The Utterly Monstrous, Mind-Roasting Saga of O.C. and Stiggs"' and subsequent documentary for Radiance Films, 'The Water is Finally Blue: The Untold Story of Robert Altman's O.C. and Stiggs'. Without these two pieces, we wouldn't have nearly as much to talk about. Hunter interviewed so many key people in the making of this, and found soooo much cool info that we talk about in this episode. He's also just a very nice person, and enjoys the show! So there you go.
Join us as we discuss lobsters, 80s teen comedies, Altman going on a gambling spree, crazy partying onset. It's everything you could possibly want in the making of an Altman movie (so of course it failed very badly when released). Some people really don't like this one, but we loved it.
