A first timer watches Doctor Who and chats with fans and experts trying to catch up on this global pop culture phenomenon that he somehow managed to miss.
First Time Lord 010 - The Doctor Dances
In a profoundly personal episode of the podcast, I discuss the story arch's conclusion that started with 'The Empty Child.' The creepy vibes of the previous installment give way to the most human moment I've witnessed the Doctor have, evoking some powerful emotions in both my guest and me. Having found solace and hope in the Doctor and his companion in these dark and tumultuous times, the ending of this episode reaffirmed mine and my guest's belief that he can bring light into the darkest of times.
Season 1, Episode 10 - The Doctor Dances.
This week, I'm joined once more by the wonderful Jennie Fay Berry, who personally requested to cover this episode because of how much she loves it.
First Time Lord 009 - The Empty Child
This episode is by far the creepiest I've watched thus far. The hallmark of good fiction, and specifically good horror, is simplicity. The simple image of a humbly dressed child, wearing a gas mask asking, "are you my mummy?" will forever haunt my dreams now. It's a more disturbing image than Fredy Krugger ever was. While World War II rages in this adventure's background, Rose gets courageous, and the Doctor is once again trying to save humankind from extinction.
Episode 9 - The Empty Child
Jenni Berry returns to First Time Lord to discuss one of her absolute favorite episodes. Listen now to uncover the secrets of The Empty Child, and learn about how 20-year-old gadgets affect future technologies. Oh, we also talk about a new character that captures my imagination and Jenni’s heart.
First Time Lord 008 - Father's Day
For weeks now, the Doctor and Rose have gone is some fantastic adventures, frequently saving the world from all sorts of alien threats. I should be used to the world being in danger of ending, but this episode hit me right in the feels. In the most sentimental and emotional episode yet, I find myself learning some exciting details about the Time Lords. I also find my heartstrings tugged by the story of Rose’s father.
First Time Lord 007 - The Long Game
By now, we've learned that Doctor Who has episodes that mean a lot to the greater story and world that the show creates, and some episodes are just "One-off" episodes. The Long Game is most definitely one of those "One-Offs." But there is so much in this episode that resonates with what is happening in the world today. While we may not be living thru "The Fourth and Bountifull Human Empire," we have a lot in common with the people of this episode, and we could learn from it.
First Time Lord 006 - Dalek
The Doctor comes face to face with some of his most feared enemies, revealing a little more about the events of the last great Time War. As this confrontation unfolds, millions of bystanders' fate may be decided by an influential American who seems to collect and profit from old alien technology. With so much past lore at play in this episode, I enlist the help of a Doctor Who fan that goes way back to help me make sense of it all.
Season 1, Episode 6 - Dalek
Jon Soble, a real old school Who fan, will help me navigate the Daleks' complex history and how this encounter may affect the Doctor in the future.
