As we approach the conclusion of John’s Gospel account, Jesus becomes remarkably intentional in his interactions with various people in the story. John skillfully draws our attention to these face-to-face encounters with Jesus. Whether it’s the intimacy of Jesus’ prayer for the disciples in the garden, his dialogue with Pilate regarding kingship, or his compassionate care for Mary by the tomb after his resurrection, each person approaches Jesus with their own agenda. And every time, Jesus brings the transformative power of the gospel to bear upon their lives – whether resulting in whole-hearted transformation or turning away in outright Jesus journeys toward the cross, he purposefully engages with specific individuals. In this, we are invited to recognize that each interaction, every miracle, and each spoken word serves as a personal invitation to us, the readers, to believe and find life in Jesus’ name (John 20:30-31). Jesus spends quite a bit of time inviting his disciples to abide in John 15:1-17 and then, in the following passage, we learn why: a storm of persecution is coming. Jesus wants his followers to know that they’ll be excluded, hated, and even abused for knowing Him but He also wants us to know that the story will never end with persecution. Through persecution, we can know Jesus more and make him known through it!
