Bouncing Back: Rehabilitation and Resilience through Sports | Ricardo Parger | Phönix

Bouncing Back: Rehabilitation and Resilience through Sports | Ricardo Parger | Phönix

As an independent production we are so grateful to work with sponsors that totally get us. Today we say thanks to our sponsor The Resilience Initiative. The Resilience Initiative promotes resilience around the world through their writing, speaking, and education programs. Their new course, HOW to Fortify Your Resilience, is designed to help people like you discover the joy of building a resilient life through meaningful connections and a robust support system.

Listen on Apple, Spotify, Google Podcasts or any of your favorite Podcast players.

Picture this: life as a game, with the odds stacked against you. Imagine the playing field, not a pitch or court, but the concrete confines of a prison yard. In this episode, we explore the intersection of resilience and rehabilitation through sports within correctional facilities – and beyond.

Meet Ricardo Parger, Founder of Phönix – Training for Life

Born in Vienna to a Spanish mother and an Austrian father, Ricardo  studied law not just to apply it, but to rethink it. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in the sociology of law, focusing on climate litigation. In his current roles, he manages Phoenix, Training for Life, an NGO dedicated to social rehabilitation programs within the Austrian prison system and leads the creation of an umbrella organization for mentoring programs in Austria.

For his work he received the 2021 Social Impact Award. However, his most meaningful achievement is witnessing the transformative impact of his sports programs on young People in prison.

Prison sports project “PHÖNIX” wins Social Impact Award 2021

“Working in Prisons is tough. The atmosphere, the architecture, everything that makes it a so called “total institution””Ricardo Parger

Ricardo realized that  if he wants to change a social system – like prisons or the way our society deals with crime –  he needs to get to know how we currently deal with it. Not only theoretically by studying law for example, but also the reality of it.

“Losing my freedom for a few minutes only made me grasp how dehuminizing it can be. For thousands of people that are being locked up every year.”Ricardo Parger

    Loss of freedom

In this episode Ricardo shares how he experiences this loss of freedom first hand – even if only for a few minutes and how this experience continues to fuel his social impact work further.

Ricardo believes that change happens when we see the problem, and find allies to solve it – within the system.

His pilot programme already bears fruit.

“I learned through the training what it means to be there for each other and how to give each other advice instead of dragging each other down,” shared one of the individuals that was part of the pilot programme at the correctional facility Korneuburg.

    It’s a team effort

Discussing Asian Heritage Month and Communities | Juhi Gangaramani & Linnea Wong

The voices you hear today belong to two remarkable young women, fearless in their pursuit of understanding, belonging, and making their voices heard. Linnea Wong and Juhi Gangaramani are university students, both studying psychology, who share a passion to discuss and empower Asian communities. They come from diverse backgrounds, but share a common thread – their Asian heritage.

Listen on Apple, Spotify, Google Podcasts or any of your favorite Podcast players.

In this episode, they peel back the layers of their personal journeys, sharing stories that will resonate with anyone who’s ever felt like they didn’t quite fit in, yet yearned for that sense of belonging.

They’ll take us on a journey through their cultural heritage, exploring how it has shaped their identities, ambitions, and perspectives.

    Common Passion

Linnea Wong and Juhi Gangaramani share a passion to discuss and empower Asian communities. Though they come from different upbringings, they share their unique experiences in their identities and how they navigate and live in their communities.

    Belonging and Communities

I picked up signs on social media of what it meant to be Chinese and Asian. It plants the seed that if you’re not any of these things, you’re not Chinese or Asian. It sparks the voices that you’re not doing it right and you’re not enough to be in this “community”. Linnea Wong shares powerfully in this episode.

Linnea is honored to share her story and empower others to feel heard and uplifted in their communities. She is passionate about supporting others, caring for people, taking the time to understand where they came from and helping them be the best version of themselves.

As someone who knows what it feels like to be suffering alone, she is passionate about being there for other people and making sure they feel supported.

Breaking down barriers to equality and representation

Racism is another topic that Linnea and Juhi tackle and share about their personal experiences growing up and facing discrimination. By exploring this, they raise important issues and have an open dialogue about breaking down barriers to equality and representation.

Take a look at the quickfire round of questions we asked Linnea:

Making an impact means:“Resonating and connecting with others through sharing your story. It means being vulnerable and honest about your lived experience to share your perspective and hopefully inspire people to think a bit differently about the world.”

Who inspires you in the way they build communities?“I look up to queer women of color who are unapologetically themselves and use that understanding of their identity to build community even when so much of the world is working against them. Their confidence and unwillingness to sacrifice who they are is inspiring.”

What could everyone do right now to make the world a better place?“I think we could all benefit from and take the time to listen and educate ourselves about a perspective we will never experience.
