This course provides a survey of the relationship between jazz and other African-American musical traditions from the early 1900's to the present including blues, R&B, rock, soul and hip hop. The development, evolution Dan influence of jazz music in America starting with it's ephemeral roots in the black folk music of the 1800's will be examined as well as the roles of jazz and jazz musicians have played in black popular music and vice versa. We'll also consider the elements that are distinct to African American music-making traditions. Lectures include numerous recorded and live listening examples and videos to augment discussions.
