Lakers Draft Dalton Knecht (Wing, Tennessee) With the 17th Pick... Steal of the Draft?

Lakers Draft Dalton Knecht (Wing, Tennessee) With the 17th Pick... Steal of the Draft?

Last season, the Lakers had opportunities to draft players in the first round that were projected to help an NBA team right away. They had a chance to draft the "lottery guy who falls." They did neither.

This year, the same opportunity presented itself, this time with the same player. As names went off the board, University of Tennessee wing Dalton Knecht, one of college basketball's best scorers in his only season with the Volunteers, was still hanging out in the audience. Projected as a lottery pick for most of the last couple months, Knecht was still available when the Lakers made their selection at 17. While nobody was really talking about him as an option—Rob Pelinka said the team had the SEC Player of the Year projected into the top 10—LA jumped at the opportunity.

Knecht is a great off-ball offensive player, described by many in the draft as one of the most NBA ready players available. He can score at multiple levels and should be the exact type of offensive player who fits in well with a team anchored by gravity-inducing/attention-demanding players like LeBron James and Anthony Davis. How well he develops defensively is a question, and teams may have passed on Knecht due to his age -- 23 at the start of the season. Young for normal people, old for NBA prospects.

That limits his upside, potentially, but the Lakers aren't looking for him to develop into a star, just a high end rotation piece with a valuable skill set. His potential to play right away has far more value than hypothetical upside three or so years down the road.

Overall, the Lakers (as you'd expect) say they're thrilled. Certainly the pick will grade out well, just because of the perceived value. But in terms of a pick that makes sense for where the Lakers are, it makes sense, too.

    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky

SEGMENT 1: The Lakers select Dalton Knecht, from Tennessee.

SEGMENT 2: Good pick? Bad pick?

    SEGMENT 3: What happens next?

NBA Draft Preview: Who Should the Lakers Select at 17 and 55? With Mike Garcia (@canyondriver)

NBA Draft Preview: Who Should the Lakers Select at 17 and 55? With Mike Garcia (@canyondriver)

The Lakers have already had a busy week, and it gets busier today, with Day 1 of the NBA Draft (that's a new thing). With all the talk of player development coming with the hiring of JJ Redick, as well as Rob Pelinka talking Monday about the challenges of making trades in the new CBA, it does seem like a strong possibility that the Lakers use the pick.

With that in mind, where should they be focused? On the best player available, regardless of position? Trying to fill a specific need or skill set? Is there a way to align those things in a constructive way, where, say the guys that really do make the most sense happen to fill some positional/roster needs? Like a true wing? A real center?

While this draft isn't considered all that impressive at the top, there does seem to be a good amount of depth available, meaning teams like the Lakers who are drafting in the middle might have a better chance to get an impact player than they otherwise might. It's a big year for scouting, because the variance in draft rankings across different teams in the league could be pretty vast. So what should the Lakers do?

To break it down, Mike Garcia (@canyondriver) joins the show. He's quickly become a favorite for draft-curious Lakers fans, and has some great insight to offer about what the Lakers should do tonight. We walk through many of the names associated with LA at 17, and then a few of his favorites that could be available. Want a big? He's got some names. A wing? He's got you covered. In the second round, some projections have Bronny James going to the Lakers at 55. Many people think this is more a novelty act than any meaningful basketball move.

Mike explains why he'd be thrilled to get Bronny at that spot.

HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky with Mike Garcia

SEGMENT 1: It's Draft day! What should the Lakers do with their pick?

SEGMENT 2: Scouting reports on players that could be around at 17.

SEGMENT 3: More scouting reports, plus talking Bronny.

JJ Redick's Press Conference: The New Lakers Coach Talks Inexperience, LeBron, Anthony Davis, etc.

JJ Redick's Press Conference: The New Lakers Coach Talks Inexperience, LeBron, Anthony Davis, etc.

The Lakers introduced JJ Redick to the media Monday. It didn't take long to get a feel for why Redick did so well through the interview process. He came off as someone with a definitive world view about basketball, and how it should be played. He had thoughts about his star players, and how he wants to use them. Redick was candid about his lack of experience as a coach, but also refused to call himself inexperienced.

So there was some confidence, and some humility.

There was also a very, very modern feel that makes it easy to understand why Rob Pelinka was, by all accounts, intrigued from the start with Redick, and why it certainly seemed like this was his job to lose. Pelinka talked about wanting a process that was different. Doing things differently, finding a different approach. Redick represents someone who (at least on the surface) is an outside-the-box hire. And to say both guys speak the language of "modern" would be an understatement. Could there be some spiritual synergy between the sideline and the front office? How might that help? (Or, potentially, hurt?)

It was interesting to hear Redick talk about how he wants to use LeBron and Anthony Davis. But most importantly, it was interesting to hear him talk about an understanding that he'll make mistakes, and that he needs to give himself grace in those situations.

But it's less about whether Redick has a shot at grace for what will be inevitable growing pains—even the most exceptional coaches learn on the job—than whether the Lakers (and by extension, Lakers Nation) affords it to him.

We'll see! It's not something the organization has been particularly good at of late.

    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky

SEGMENT 1: The Lakers introduce JJ Redick.

SEGMENT 2: What did we learn at the Redick press conference?

SEGMENT 3: Why did Pelinka find Redick so attractive as a candidate?

JJ Redick to be Introduced by Lakers Monday. What to Watch For... Plus, It's NBA Draft Week!

JJ Redick to be Introduced by Lakers Monday. What to Watch For... Plus, It's NBA Draft Week!

The Lakers are introducing JJ Redick Monday as their next head coach, throwing a big ol' press conference to celebrate. Given that this is the first time they've spoken to the media since firing Darvin Ham right after the end of the playoffs, there will be much to discuss, not just about Redick himself, but everything that's led up to this moment.

    Should be quite an afternoon!

Particularly since there's no body of work to reference, how Redick answers even the most basic questions will be heavily scrutinized. People will be looking for signs and subtext in virtually every comment. But it will undoubtedly be fascinating to get a feel for what attracted the Lakers to Redick and what his tenure might look like. What's different about this guy, with zero experience, that had the Lakers put him at the front of the line and essentially keep him there (HurleyGate aside)?

We've heard him as a players, broadcaster and podcaster, but it's different after you've been hired to coach the Lakers.

Plus, it's Draft week! There's a lot to get into, whether for Monday's press conference or beyond. The Lakers have some huge decisions to make around pick 17 in the first round. Will they keep it? If so, are they looking for best available, or to find a player with a specific skill that Redick values?

Finally... is this the year CP3 FINALLY becomes a Laker? It's certainly a possibility, but is it a good idea?

    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky

    SEGMENT 1: Hi, JJ!

SEGMENT 2: What should the Lakers be looking for in the Draft?

    SEGMENT 3: CP... Maybe?

Lakers Hire JJ Redick. Did Rob Pelinka Get this Right? What Assistants Should be Targeted?

Lakers Hire JJ Redick. Did Rob Pelinka Get this Right? What Assistants Should be Targeted?

At long (like, loooooong) last, the Lakers have finally hired a coach. As widely anticipated, save one brief/public with UConn's Dan Hurley, the new guy in town is JJ Redick, whose communication skills, charisma, and basketball intellect are being bet on to offset having never coached anybody older than children. Is this a brilliant roll of the dice? The Lakers flocking to the shiniest of objects and starriest of names without any real regard for a process? A little bit of both? Only time will tell, but there's a lot at stake for the purple and gold moving forward.

    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky

Segment 1: Ladies and gentlemen, we have a coach!!!

Segment 2: Did the Lakers' contract signal real trust in Redick?

Segment 3: What assistants does Redick need?

Mailbag question

Hi Anthony and Pete, shoutout from a daily listener from Brazil. Congrats on the show, if you ever need an international fan as guest, hit me hahaha. Question: OKC knew that they were actually giving awat PG AND Kawhi. Do you think that they would do it if it were the Lakers instead of LAC or they would act on “bad faith” as did NOP on the AD trade? Besides that, if it was known that PG + Kawhi was a possibility, should the lakers/would you have put the AD trade on hold to go for it?? If I may say another thing, let’s stop with this Kuz + Mamba mentality thing. Mamba mentatility isn’t just taking your craft seriously. I do it, you do it. Kobe would get into people’s mind, not only on the physical aspect, and Kuz is far from it. Congrats again!
