Ben Jones - President / CEO of the Ruffed Grouse Society and American Woodcock Society

Just days before the pandemic required our country to close down I was able to sit down with Ben Jones who is the President and CEO of two hunting conservation organizations: The Ruffed Grouse Society and the American Woodcock Society. We were at Pheasant Fest which is the annual meeting of the organization Pheasants Forever, and great conservation partner of both Ben's organizations and Modern Carnivore.

We talk about forest health and how proper management can help replicate natural disturbances that have been eliminated as the human population continues to expand across our continent.

Diversity In Hunting – Modern Carnivore Podcast (EP:014)

Diversity In Hunting – Modern Carnivore Podcast (EP:014)

    Diversity In Hunting

Diversity in hunting and the inclusion of all people is a serious issue that hasn't often received enough serious attention. We in the outdoor world who hunt and fish are not immune to this. For too long the community and the industries that feed off it have been too insulated, playing only to those who were traditionally active participants. It's now time to reach out to the broader world and welcome people into the water and woods to take part in hunting, fishing and foraging.

It's unfortunate that there are still hurdles to this and that it takes situations like the killing of George Floyd for people to wake up to the challenges that exist for people of color, or any other identifying characteristic that attracts judgement by others. Modern Carnivore has made a commitment to highlight these issues, to talk about them, and to continue to look for ways to eliminate barriers to entry in the outdoors.

In this episode Mark's guests are Jenny Ly who is the founder of Chasing Food Club and Alex Kim who is the former diversity coordinator for Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. They're both new hunters and share their thoughts and perspectives on starting to hunt not only as an adult, but as a Vietnamese Canadian and a Korean American.

At Modern Carnivore our mission has been, and always will be:

...To awaken the hunter within. We introduce people to hunting, fishing and foraging through conversations about real food. We respect each person's background and welcome them into a community that values conservation, access to public lands, fair chase of fish and game and the enjoyment of real wild food.

I hope you find this podcast helpful as we look to have more conversations on the issue of inclusion in the outdoors. Founder Of The Weston A. Price Foundation

In Episode 11 of the Modern Carnivore Podcast I'm joined by Sally Fallon Morell. Sally is the founder of the Weston A. Price Foundation and also the author of Nourishing Fats - Why We Need Animal Fats For Health & Happiness.

Sally had several ailments when she was younger but found that she felt better when she had fat in her diet. This led her to researching the work of Dr. Weston A. Price and then authoring several cookbooks. She then went on to form the Weston A. Price Foundation in 1999 with Mary Enig, PhD. The organization "always aims to provide the scientific validation of traditional foodways". The work of Dr. Price definitely has it's detractors as it flies in the face of much of the modern dietary guidelines. I think you'll find this conversation with Sally very interesting.

Transcript Of Podcast - Fish Cookbook by Jon Wipfli

    Introduction: 00:08

Welcome to the Modern Carnivore Podcast. A guide for those interested in hearing more about hunting, fishing and other paths to eating more responsibly. Now here's your host, Mark Norquist.

    Mark: 00:23

Hello everyone and welcome to this episode 10 of the Modern Carnival or podcast. Today I am joined by John Wipfli and Jamie Carlson. Jamie, you are probably familiar with as he is a regular contributor on Modern Carnivore and if you haven't checked out a couple of his recent recipes, I highly recommend it. One of them is a nettle pasta and if you think about stinging nettles, they're generally something that you want to avoid when you're in the outdoors because obviously they can create a stingy irritation, uh, to your skin. But Jamie shares with everyone a recipe for turning these wild weeds into this beautiful green pasta, which I think is pretty fascinating. Another recipe he recently did was a venison heart tar-tar. If you have not eaten heart from a large angulate like a, like a deer, you're missing out. The tar tar recipe is, is essentially a way to prepare it raw and, uh, I've had heart with Jamie before and I know he knows how to prepare it very well and so I think you would find that recipe fascinating.

So I'm also joined today by John Wipfli. John is a new guest on the Modern Carnivore podcast. John and I get to know each other several years ago when he was an executive chef developing menus for a major barbecue chain and I knew at that tim...
