Paxahau Radio Episode 008 - Pontchartrain

“This is what edits are supposed to sound like.”
    ~Juno Records

In 2014 after nearly a decade of collecting records, and playing various roles in the dance music scene of Detroit and West Michigan, the Pontchartrain moniker was born. What began as tools for his own personal dancefloor use turned into head-turning release after release of his vision for edits of forgotten classics and sample-heavy house cuts. In a short couple of years, his release catalog has gained support from various well respected artists, garnered him international bookings and acclaim, and earned him the A&R position for Sleazy McQueen’s highly sought after Whiskey Disco imprint. The sounds he chooses, reflect the obvious influences from Detroit’s past, with a new face and ideology that continues to entertain and surprise.

Paxahau Radio Episode 007 - Rebecca Goldberg

Paxahau Radio Episode 007 - Rebecca Goldberg

Back when radio ruled and the boombox gave us mixtapes, live broadcasts were the very essence of the Detroit club-music scene. Technology was turning cassettes into CDs and Rebecca’s frequent trips to Harmony House fueled her music collection. She poured over the cherished tunes that were spun on Saturday nights at the State Theatre’s legendary “Club X”. Inspired by Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale, the Godmother of House Music, who was reigning over the airwaves, it was only a matter of time before Rebecca would satiate her musical appetite as a disc jockey.

Rebecca is now a seasoned radio DJ, having mixed on Detroit public radio station WDET 101.9's Sunday Sessions show, 89.3 WHFR out of Dearborn, as well as various internet radio stations hosted in Detroit and worldwide. She just released her second EP of 2016 under the moniker 313 Acid Queen. In January, she released “A Trip to the Moon” an EP arranged to accompany Georges Méliès’ classic 1902 silent film “Le Voyage Dans La Lune.”

Paxahau Radio Episode 006 - Dan Bain

Paxahau Radio Episode 006 - Dan Bain

Dan Bain says that DJs just play other people’s music. His humility, however, cloaks the fact that his DJ sets sound like his own harmonious song. Vocals that ripple, keys that drip, and buoyant percussion are the standard to this Detroit native.
Bain cannot be whittled down to a genre. Having traversed the dunes of house and techno, to the crest of indie and trip-hop, he maintains a unique presence. His sense of victory comes by reach- ing even one person in the audience, although the majority hold on for the duration of the set. His sonic language comforts the dancer who is heartbroken, gyrates the weekend warrior, enlightens the lost, and flirts with the rest, even leaving his own heart on the dance floor.
With an ever-expanding music collection that includes his favorite 12"s, LPs and 45s, Dan’s depth of knowledge hints at an insatiable quest of the universal language. On any given night, whether his message is through hip-hop, heartfelt house, or the quickened pace of techno, there is always a gentle let-down, but never a conclusion. You’ll have to return for the next chapter in the story.

Paxahau Radio Episode 005 - Chuck Daniels

Paxahau Radio Episode 005 - Chuck Daniels

Sire to the Sampled Detroit imprint, Chuck Daniels’s career extends back to an era when info lines were fundamental, mistakes made a mix more compelling, and DJs sought not to be superstars, but to cast spells on rooms full of people through thoughtfully-crafted acoustics. There was neither GPS nor auto-sync, and getting lost on the road was as much a part of the adventure as getting lost in the music. Innately authentic, Daniels’s DJing continues to embody the true and original essence of underground dance music culture.

A sous chef of sound, his sets play like a well-perfected recipe: just blend jazz, techno and disco over a heavy base of house, then simmer with funk and soul. Best served hot from the front left speaker.
