2.6 Zen and the Art of Doing Nothing: A guided meditation for A Little Time Off!

2.6 Zen and the Art of Doing Nothing: A guided meditation for A Little Time Off!

"It’s better be a person for a day than to be a shadow for a 1,000 days."
Have you ever practiced Zen meditation? I hadn't either until a four day INTENSE retreat last week! In this episode, I share my honest, mixed reviews of this practice and then lead you threw a short zen guided meditation. We'll also talk about some of the main tenets of Zen Buddhism. If you're looking for a few minutes to chill, or want to learn about Buddhism or what it might be like to go on a meditation retreat, then listen up. You deserve a little time off!

2.5 Dealing With Depression (my story)

2.5 Dealing With Depression (my story)

In this super personal ep, I talk about how I came to acknowledge and eventually treat my anxiety and depression. I'll get in depth about symptoms, therapy, how I found (and changed) therapists, and how I eventually began to take medicine to treat my depression and then find the right dosage. If you're struggling with mental health, I hope this episode can serve as inspiration for next steps in your journey. If you're wanting to learn more or hear about what it feels like to struggle with anxiety and depression, my story is one example and can hopefully give you more context to care for yourself or a loved one! 2.3: Queer Burnout: An Interview with My Friends

2.3: Queer Burnout: An Interview with My Friends

Last season, I covered Anne Helen Peterson's article: "How Millennials Became the Burnout Generation" and Tiana Clark's response about burnout in the black community. That made me think about all of the ways that our identities intersect with how we experience work, fatigue, and everything in between. So this season, I'll be interviewing people to talk about burnout from diverse perspectives. I'm so excited to start with this interview with my friends Katie and Ali here in Salt Lake City. We talk about queerness, pride, and how being out can affect your work-life.

We'll also talk about ways to address burnout and the largest systemic problems that cause it.

One way is to donate to Rest for Resistance.

Run by the organization QTPOC Mental Health , "Rest for Resistance strives to uplift marginalized communities, those who rarely get access to adequate health care or social support. This includes Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Pacific Islander, Asian, Middle Eastern, and multiracial persons.

We also seek to create healing space for LGBTQIA+ individuals, namely trans & queer people of color, as well as other stigmatized groups such as sex workers, immigrants, persons with physical and/or mental disabilities, and those living at the intersections of all of the above.

Our team of editors, seven trans people of color, seek to honor each contributor's vision and individual perspective in order to create space for raw experiences that are too often silenced. Interested in contributing? Feel free to reach out with writing and art portfolios."

As always, let me know what you think of the episode and any questions or resources you want to share!

2.2 Intro to Meditation: A Little Time Off

2.2 Intro to Meditation: A Little Time Off

This is the first in the series of mini-episodes called A Little Time Off, created bi-weekly to help you actually practice self-care and address burnout. In each edition of A Little Time Off,  Maeve will lead you through either a guided meditation or thought and journal prompts. This week, we kick it off with a brief, accessible intro to meditation. We'll talk about Thich Nhat Hanh, founder of the Plum Village Buddhist Tradition. Then Maeve will lead you through a 6 minute guided meditation to serve as an entryway into the practice. We'll focus on noticing our breath and how that makes us feel. I hope you can take A Little Time Off for yourself this week. You deserve it.

    2.1: Wellness vs. Weight Loss

    2.1: Wellness vs. Weight Loss

In the FIRST EPISODE OF SEASON 2 (!!!!!) I discuss Jessica Knoll's article in the New York Times called "Smash the Wellness Industry." I break down her criticisms of wellness as it is equated to weight loss and then dig deeper by discussing fatphobia, body-shaming, and society's false equation of thinness with health. I get personal with my own toxic, diet culture journey and how veganism helped me to define my own version of wellness. Below are some helpful body-positive resources if you're looking to tackle your own internalized body-shame and fatphobia. Get mindful and be well.
