Talking Planning was born out of a desire to educate and talk about the urban planning and transport professions, from a young professional's perspective. With such a strong promise of change on the horizon, it is crucial that we discuss some of these decisons and the types of infrastructure, city management and policy that can make our places better, and how to get involved in the profession.

Episode 6- A preliminary housing affordability discussion

After a long hiatus, it's time to bring back the podcast! Housing affordability is becoming ever more topical as mortgage rates climb and rents continue to increase. So what can we do about it? Listen in for some ideas and how planning can help, particularly in the long term.

    Episode 5 - When it's flooded, don't forget us!

    Episode 5 - When it's flooded, don't forget us!

After what has been quite a while since my last podcast episode, I wanted to talk about some important current events and look at why disaster preparedness is crucial to planning, in the light of the recent flooding events across Queensland and New South Wales.

This episode is a discussion on some of the key considerations in flood planning, disaster response and weighing up some of the benefits and challenges of planning being a political process.

Talking Planning Podcast EP4 - Getting started as a Planner (University Orientation)

Talking Planning Podcast EP4 - Getting started as a Planner (University Orientation)

Some of you may be experienced in the planning profession already, but for many, university is the first introduction into the profession. This episode is a short guide to look at what the next few years of an urban planning degree may have in store, especially for someone who is unfamiliar with university, and some of the expectations of the profession, such as work experience for students. Given that orientation week for most Australian students is around this time of year, I thought it topical to discuss the university experience.

Talking Planning Podcast EP3- Back to Brisbane! (for a holiday only)

Talking Planning Podcast EP3- Back to Brisbane! (for a holiday only)

Welcome back for the first Podcast episode of 2022, and today it's time to talk a little bit about my old home town, Brisbane. I spent a couple of weeks back there over Christmas and it was a good opportunity to compare what I grew up with, to what I know now.  It was a nostalgic trip, but I am also enjoying living regionally, so this episode compares some of the benefits, and challenges to regional living, and good planning and transport decisions that need to be applied across both areas.

Talking Planning Podcast Episode 2- Transport Culture

Talking Planning Podcast Episode 2- Transport Culture

For the first full episode, I wanted to talk a bit about the transport culture that is common in Australian towns and cities in a little more detail.

Chances are, if you've grown up in Australia, North America, New Zealand or the UK, you have lived a car-based life, and whilst many of us see this as 'normal', it does have some downsides, and its time to explore those today.

There are cities which have changed their perspective on transport over the years quite successfully, and there are opportunities for this change across towns and cities big and small.

    EP1- Introduction

    EP1- Introduction

Welcome to the very first episode of the Talking Planning podcast.
Having hosted a YouTube channel for the last year and a half or so, I thought it was time to create a platform that goes a little more in-depth discussing planning and transport concepts, rather than just trying out public transport services.
After all, I may as well put my degree to good use!
So, come and join me for the journey. This episode is an intoduction to the host, yours truly, and the few life experiences that will help to shape future episodes.
