A famous bakery in the small town of Corsicana, Texas, has been selling its world-renowned fruitcakes since 1896. Over the years, this bakery became quite successful by being on the cutting edge of mail-order desserts and shipping its fruitcakes worldwide. However, in the 1990s, fruitcakes fell out of fashion, and the bakery hit a slump.
During this time, one of the bakery's accountants saw an opportunity. As the sole accountant for the sizable company, he had access to the books and the authority to print checks. Over the course of 9 years, he slowly siphoned off millions of dollars by disguising fraudulent checks as legitimate business expenses.

This week's episode covers the story of a man named Richard McGuire who snuck onto a deserted island at Disney World called Discovery Island. The island used to have an attraction in the 1970s and 80s where you could see exotic animals and birds. It was shut down in 1999 after Animal Kingdom opened. Since then, it has sat abandoned, becoming somewhat of an urban exploration destination that people have tried to sneak into and explore. However, no one had spent much time on the island before getting caught.
Richard McGuire decided to spend a week camping on the island to explore it fully. He swam over under cover of darkness but was caught by security cameras. This led to a large police and security presence on the island looking for him. He managed to evade them for a while but eventually turned himself in to prevent them from arresting his wife instead. He was banned from Disney parks for life but only received a small fine.

Ning Li was a Chinese-American physicist who made breakthroughs in anti-gravity research, only to vanish from public life under mysterious circumstances. Born in China in 1943, Li emigrated to the U.S. in the 1980s and obtained a position at the University of Alabama's Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research. There, she published numerous papers outlining a theoretical model for a practical anti-gravity device. Li claimed such a device could generate an anti-gravitational field around itself, causing objects to levitate. Her work garnered much interest and speculation.

This episode of the Things I Learned Last Night podcast covers the incredible story of Marilyn Hartman, a woman who repeatedly was able to sneak onto commercial airline flights without a ticket starting in 2002. She was first caught in 2014 on a flight from San Jose to LAX but claims she successfully snuck onto around 30 flights before getting caught. After being caught, she continued finding ways to bypass airport security and sneak onto flights, getting caught multiple more times over the years. She was even able to fly from Chicago to London in 2018 before being sent back.
Her methods seemed to involve blending in with other passengers and taking advantage of lapses in TSA and gate agent diligence. She claims it was due to trauma and feeling an urge to "flight" instead of "fight," but she also seems to enjoy the challenge. After her final arrest in 2020, she claimed to be done with her airplane-hopping days.
