Here we go! Here we go again! Every time Chad brings up marriage, Alex tells him how dumb it is! Come on Alex! What if it’s right? Why is Crosby so against getting married to his ten-year girlfriend? In this episode, Rob welcomes a good friend and fellow athletic trainer, Doug West P.H.D.
Doug West is one of the staff athletic trainers at the University of Iowa with nearly 30 years of experience working with Division I athletics. Rob and Doug spend the next hour working through topics like legacy programs and teams, having athletic kids and what parents should focus on, and communicating with young athletes. They also get into some sports science as we talk about our respective areas of study and our thesis work in graduate school. Also covered are some injuries and treatment techniques, how to take care of injuries, or finding someone with the right experience to get you through your injuries. Rob welcomes his son Spencer to the show. Spencer is joining the basketball coaching world as an assistant coach. After playing Division 3 basketball, Spencer decided to go into the profession of coaching. In pursuit of this, he found a graduate assistant (GA) basketball coaching position at Vanderbilt University, a very prestigious school and a strong conference. The SEC conference has some of the best athletes, coaches and facilities in the world. The GA position is a 2-year position where you get to learn all the ins and outs of basketball at the highest level while working on a master's degree. Spencer is now joining the staff at Eastern Florida State, a junior college that has a strong tradition of sending young basketball players to the next level. We hope you enjoy this conversation with a very new coach, but one who is driven to help young players and himself rise up in the ranks.
