Coping with covid - by using "where's wally?"

Coping with covid - by using "where's wally?"

Today I feature a gentleman from my local village who has created something fun for the community of Sturton by Stow.  The idea is showcase some of the more positives events that have arose living through this pandemic.  It's not a walk in the park, it's not just something that has been around for a short while but something than may affect us for a while.

Between Emma Bradley and Jason Spering created an idea to have a bit of fun but has turned in to a daily treasure hunt for the village.  They made a small Wally made out of wood, painted this and started hiding this during the evening the around the village.  Afterwards a post would be put in the community Facebook group and whoever found it was encouraged to post a picture of them with Wally.

Jason talks to us why he created his and also about:

    keeping fit
    being stealthy
    accused of breaking in!
    50 days
    local press
    effects of getting involved
    Nemo & the future

This is just a short interview, the idea being to look at the blog article and see the photo gallery of the community taking part.  I commend there efforts for doing something positive for the local community, especially the children.

The charity perspective with Julia Knight

The charity perspective with Julia Knight

Having looked around for different perspectives it was quite apparent I was missing charities for my "coping with covid" series.  Luckily Julia Knight contacted me through the local village group.  She told me about a charity she worked for involving a medical condition that is not too well known.  Like many charities, they've had to consider how they can cope with changes in the world, generosity and campaigning during these hard times.

Julia is the press manager for Lyme Disease UK and talks to us about ticks, the charity and coping with covid.  She also tells us a little about the disease from her personal experience and how this affected her life, relationship and career!  From her beginnings in the military to nursing and working in other countries.

    In this one we discuss:

    90 year olds & zoom
being bed bound for 7 years
why she is unable to read books
    securing funding
    Bransby horses
    remote working
    fancy dress quizzes
    Powerpoint voice overs

Life is different for everyone, covid has affected all and Julia tells us about her family and parents.  We also discuss what it is the one thing she wants to do when lockdown is over

The small business perspective with Leyton Cleveley

The small business perspective with Leyton Cleveley

I am pleased to bring you an interview with Leyton Cleveley who works in the I.T. and business world.  As a self employed small business man running his company Cleveley Dynamics from his base in Scotland it's interesting to get his viewpoint on "coping with covid".  He was aslo kind enough to sponsor the website for this show too, so really do appreciate this.

I've known Leyton a few years and met through a random photography project a couple of years ago.  We became friends through this and I managed to visit his home during 2018.  He's an educated and travelled man, so it's interesting to hear his thoughts on coping with situations.  Make sure you listen to his harrowing experiences in Japan too and how he coped with this tragedy.

    In this one we discuss:

    payment terms
    burning out
    analytical thinking
    mental health
    Brexit
    Japan earthquake
    government schemes
    the tabloids + truth

This interview was recorded on the 10th May, just after the UK prime minister started his staged approach to come out the lockdown.  However, as Leyton points out this does not relate to Scotland (only England as it turns out).

A teachers perspective by Tobias Beach-Wyld

A teachers perspective by Tobias Beach-Wyld

Today i'm pleased to present another different viewpoint - this time through the eyes of a teacher.  Tobias Beach-Wyld is a secondary school teacher in the UK (Lincolnshire) and a head of Media studies department.  Tobias teaches photography and is a talented photographer himself, recently finishing his masters too.

Tobias discusses many matters relating to education, children and health, including how us parents are doing.  He actually suffers with a blood disorder and has been inside a hospital during the pandemic and has to remain in lockdown due to this condition.

    In this one we cover:

    moving house
    hospital visit
    remote teaching
    budgets
    childrens health
    student grading
    impacts of decisions
    future of meetings
    return to school

It was kind of Tobias to spend the time with us and talk openly about life, he understands how hard it is for everyone and commends how well parents are having to stand up.  I mean remember teachers do 4 years training for their roles, not a few days!

A courier's perspective by John Harrison from DPD

A courier's perspective by John Harrison from DPD

Today we interview John Harrison who works for the courier DPD.  John is a friendly face and involves himself in the community in all the villages he visits by using Facebook.  So I thought it would be nice to get an insight in to whats going on in the courier world during the crises.

    In this podcast we discuss:

    home life
    being branded a key worker
    community spirit
    safety measures when delivering
    super hero face masks
    DPD procedures through Corona
    difficulty in shopping

One of the points of the show is to spread some positivity too.  We find out its their 25th wedding anniversary later this year and can't wait to have a big family meet up in the North Yorkshire moors, which sounds great.

I cannot thank John enough for spending time with me, it's not often people randomly ask you for interviews and I thought he did really well.  For anyone local to Sturton, Saxilby, Scampton, Stow and Ingham areas, please watch out for John and his posts on Facebook and say hello, he's a friendly guy.

Coping with covid - report from a health worker on the front line

Coping with covid - report from a health worker on the front line

Welcome to the very first episode of "coping with Covid" , my new series to document life under the pandemic.  We are featuring an array of people from different places in the world, so we get an even picture of what is happening.

Today's guest stands out in some ways because of his role in life - health care. Today I want you to welcome David Collyer who works as an anaesthetist assistant in a hospital in Abergavenny, Wales, UK.

David joined my photography show "Photography insights" with his son Ned on episode 61 in 2019 and was very popular due to the unique relationship.  He spends his time documenting all manner of subjects from portraiture to landscapes and everyday life.  David has a very good eye for detail and showing characters, whilst being able to develop his own work (yes another film shooter).

However, that is not his full story, David also has been given permission to shoot inside his hospital and help document about the crisis.

So listen to this show as we talk about:

    health protection equipment

    UK predicated figures

    private medical care

    Queen's toilet seat

    work/life balance

    shooting Covid on film

    NHS funding

    time off & hobbies

    Covid

    93,000 infected

12,100 deaths as of 13 April
