As we engage a wrap up message from our Gospel of John series, this Sunday, what should be emphasized? I'd like to explore the question, in John's Gospel, "What and How does belief in and following Jesus look like?" We will look at the heart of John's Gospel to find some answers. It has a lot to do with washing feet, loving God and others, faithfulness, obedience, and producing fruit. John 13-17 reveals much of the answer as Jesus focuses on his last hours of discipleship with his disciples. And we get to listen in!

In John 13, Jesus shows the disciples 'the full extent of his love.' How? By getting up from his place of honor as Master, Teacher, and Lord, taking off his outer garment, wrapping a towel around his waist, and washing and drying each of the disciples feet. As Master, Teacher, and Lord, he takes on the form of a servant.
When he finished he asks a probing question, "Do you understand what I have done for you?" Then he gives them a life-changing call, "Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet." Followed by a powerful promise, "Now that you know this, you will be blessed if you do this."

Sunday we look at a powerful living illustration of the wedding of Grace and Truth - that is Jesus! Some teachers of the law bring a woman caught in adultery before Jesus, stones in hand, ready to stone her to death, seeking Jesus approval while at the same time desiring to trap him and discredit him before the crowd gathered there.
Jesus is masterful in his words and actions. With two simple phrases, he dismantles their self-righteous and judgmental attitudes and disarms the stones from their grasp. So much to explore, questions abound, mystery of truth and grace wedded together in this story affirming Jesus as 'the way, the truth, and the life.' In the story Jesus essentially is saying, "I am the forgiveness of sins... and the offer of a transformed life of walking in holiness.'

Sunday is a moving day: we move from the seven 'I am's' of Jesus in the Gospel of John to three final messages to sum it all up - the Grace, Washing Feet, and Abiding Way of Jesus.
In John 14:1-17a Jesus proclaims, "I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me." This statement of Jesus seems exclusive. On one hand it is. On the other hand, it's for all who hear and believe - inclusive to everyone to engage by grace, through faith, in Jesus Christ.

Are you fruity? Are you well attached to the vine? In some of his final words Jesus encourages us to draw close, be close, stay close. He even calls us friends. We know his secrets and the desires of his heart. Now we are his friends. A place of great honor.
Then he gives us the most important instructions for carrying out his plan and the key to getting whatever we ask for.
