DREW’S FAVORITE PAULS: Paul Henderson & Paul Young The Drew Marshall Show

    • Religion & Spirituality

Paul Henderson will forever be recognized and remembered for his goal with 34 seconds remaining in the 8th game of the 1972 Summit Series, giving Canada the lead and winning them the series. With that, the team became known as “the Team of the Century” and Paul’s goal as “the Goal of the Century.” But, there is more to Paul Henderson than just that one goal. Despite his recent diagnosis with cancer, his positive demeanor and zest for life remain. In his memoir The Goal of My Life, Henderson opens up about his success both on and off the ice. Henderson’s career spanned 19 professional seasons during which he played over 1,000 major league games in the NHL and WHA. He was a two-time NHL all-star, playing in the 1972 and 1973 All-Star Games. Sportswriters and fans have frequently called for Henderson to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on the strength of his performance. Commentator and former coach Don Cherry argued that Henderson’s status as a hero of the “greatest series in hockey history” was enough to qualify him. Henderson has been inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame on two occasions. He was first inducted as an individual in 1995, and again ten years later along with his 1972 teammates. He has been honoured by Hockey Canada with the Order of Hockey in Canada as part of its 2013 class. Henderson was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 2012 in recognition of “his engagement in support of a range of social and charitable causes” along with his achievements on the ice.

AND

Paul Young, Mackenzie Allen Phillips’s youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in the midst of his great sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment, he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change his life forever. THE SHACK wrestles with the timeless question, \"Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?\" In Drew’s opinion, one of the best love stories he’s ever read. The Shack was recently turned into a major motion picture starring Academy Award winner, Octavia Spencer (The Help) & Sam Worthington (Hacksaw Ridge, Clash Of The Titans, Avatar). www.theshackmovie.ca About 12 years ago, THE SHACK, was a self-published novel, originally written as a Christmas gift for Paul Young’s kids. Then, with a marketing budget of a few hundred dollars, eventually, the book sold over a million copies within a year, out of his garage. Today, THE SHACK has sold over 24 million copies worldwide. A few years ago, while staying at a Benedictine monastery on an island off the coast of the Western Sahara, Drew asked one of the monks to show him the oldest books they had in the library. The Brother placed this ancient document on a table but Drew quickly recognized the book underneath it. “A CABANAS” by William P. Young. Even though Drew was in a vow of silence, he was able to question the monk as to why this book was part of their library, since, in Drew’s mind, THE SHACK is a book that in many ways challenges religion. The young Brother said that it was his favorite book. As a matter of fact, THE SHACK was a favourite amongst all the monks.
