Opponents of Enbridge Pipeline Testify at Public Hearing

Knowing the history of the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline is critical to understand ongoing opposition to the company’s plan to reroute the pipeline. Every day, Line 5 moves over 23 millions gallons of natural gas liquids, light crude oil, and light synthetic crude over 600 miles through the heart of the Great Lakes and over the Bad River Reservation. Since its inception in 1967, Line 5 has spilled 33 times, releasing over one million gallons of oil along its length from Superior, Wisconsin through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, under the Straits of Mackinac, and down to refineries in Sarnia, Ontario.

On Tuesday, the Army Corps of Engineers held a public hearing in Ashland regarding the permit Enbridge needs to rebuild Line 5.

Over 150 environmental activists from Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota attended the hearing to voice opposition to the company’s plan to reroute the pipeline over 186 waterways.

Longtime activist Marc Rosenthal attended the hearing and talks this morning with 8 O’Clock Buzz hosts Tony Castañeda and Eli Wilz about the specific threats the pipeline poses and the importance of organizing through groups like 350 Wisconsin and the Sierra Club.

The EATS Act: How Big Ag Influences What We Eat

California’s Prop 12, a major victory to regulate the animal agriculture industry won a court victory in that state, but that hasn’t stopped Big Ag from trying to influence federal regulations, according to Rebecca Wolf, Senior Analyst at Food and Water Watch. In Wolf’s recent article, “The EATS Act: Lawmakers’ Big Gift to Big Ag in this Farm Bill“, she talks about how this federal bill will overrule animal rights, harm small farms, and shift the balance of power over agriculture from the states to the federal government.
