In this episode, Paulo and Jake will be discussing who the Holy Spirit is, His role in the OT&NT, as well as today.

    Show Notes:
    1. Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is the personal presence, power, and active personhood of God.
The Holy Spirit both acts within and upon men and women
The Holy Spirit is not an “it” but a part of the personhood of God in a unique way
The Holy Spirit and the Spirit of Jesus often get interchanged within the letters of Paul, thus creating a distinction and sameness between them.
OT Summary: God’s Spirit empowered certain individuals for specific purposes. Many times it was to show that his authority had been given to a specific leader of Israel. Many times it was to give a prophetic word to the nation of Israel.

NT Summary: The Holy Spirit became the driving force of the NT Church. Through his guidance, direction, empowerment, and lifestyle, the world was turned upside down. Hearts were changed. ( he is the embodiment of the law written on hearts, not stone)
The very fabric of what it means to follow God was transformed from a rule of law to a transformed heart (the core of our being).
The Spirit became a “deposit” or a foretaste of God’s fulfilled kingdom. That is why the Spirit is so valuable. Without it, we cannot even understand what the promised Kingdom is like or to be raised to new life. The Spirit’s promise then and now is this: If we listen to his voice and put into practice his life we will reap the fruit of everlasting life in the age to come. The Spirit becomes the deposit for future hope.

Like in the NT the Holy Spirit is available to us today. He must be at the center of all we do. Here however is a list of things that the Holy Spirit provides for our lives:
Words to speak in order to present God’s truth (Mark 13:11, Acts 4:8, Acts 7, Acts 17:22-34)
    Prophetic words (1 Cor. 14:3-5, 1 Cor. 13, Acts 11:27-28)
Gifts of the Spirit (1 Cor. 12:1-11)
Roles in the Church Family (Romans 12:6-8)
Direction, Visions, Dreams (Joel 2, Acts 10:9-16, Acts 16:9-10)
Transformed Heart and Character (1 Cor. 13, Romans 8, Galatians 5:22-26)
    New Identity (Romans 8, 2 Cor. 5:16-17, John 3)
Pray for us when we don’t have words (Romans 8:26-27)
A promise of God’s life to come (Ephesians 1:13-14)
The power that is able to raise us from the dead (Romans 8:11)

S.2 Ep. 7 Spiritual Practices: Becoming A Person Of Depth

This episode is a crash course on the Spiritual Disciplines laid out in Richard Foster's book Celebration of Spiritual Disciplines. We will examine how these practices can form us into a person of depth.

    1. Inward:
-Meditation (opportunity to allow the Holy Spirit to search our hearts, and reveal things in us)
    - Prayer (prayer is the key orienting time of speaking to God and hearing from God)
    - Fasting (More than any other discipline fasting reveals the things that control us. We often
cover up our ugly desires and behaviors but hunger can reveal what we have been hiding
from ourselves). (Jesus expected his disciples to fast)
    - Study (Study of scripture is the practice by which we can learn and understand the word of
    God)
    2. Outward
    - Simplicity (decluttering, removing distractions, and not creating busy work is a practice by which we can make space for God)
    - Solitude (getting alone is the only way we can really shut off other voices and hear the voice of our father. Sometimes we are terrified because we realize we will have to face what is really inside of us)
    - Submission: Practicing the way of letting go, not always needing our way, honoring others, and realizing we do not always need to be right. This frees us from resentment and bitterness)
    - Service: This is the practice by which we can meet the needs of others. Whether it's feeding the homeless, helping at church, or cleaning up the house. We can honor and love others through our service)
    3. Corporate
-Confession: (sharing and repenting of sins to one another. There is power in releasing the
shame of sin by confessing to one another. We were made to be relational. Often it can break the power of strong addiction and sin over our lives)
-Worship: (Coming together in praise and worship is a way to hear corporately from God. To have a sense of us together, and to pray for one another)
