    If you've always wanted to work in music, but aren't sure where to start, then this episode is for you!
    Back in July, VOCAL GIRLS was invited by Truck Festival to do a panel talk at their Tap Room stage: ‘Breaking Into the Music Industry with Vocal Girls’. Hosted by VOCAL GIRLS founder and music journalist, Megan Graye and VOCAL GIRLS content producer Dani Murden, the panel featured Cherym, Indy Brewer, and members of the VG team.
    With different guests working in different areas of the industry (musician; management; PR; graphic design; and journalism), we chatted about how everyone started out, their fears, failures, and hot tips for those taking their first few steps.

    RACHEL CHINOURIRI: VOCAL GIRLS X THE GREAT ESCAPE

    The VOCAL GIRLS podcast is the series where music journalist and VOCAL GIRLS Founder, Megan Graye, chats to artists about their past, present and future, and the music that intertwines these experiences. This series is a collaboration with The Great Escape Festival, so for this series Megan will be interviewing four key artists from their line-up. This week, Megan's speaking to singer-songwriter, Rachel Chinouriri. 
    After recording some songs on a budget mic and her mum’s laptop aged 17, Rachel released her first ep ‘bedroom tales’ on Soundcloud. Since then she’s signed a record deal with Parlophone, had her music shared by her personal idols Coldplay, and most recently bagged a Hottest Record on Clara Amfo’s show on R1 with her latest single, ‘All I ever asked'.
    Rachel’s sound is delicate, soothing and layered. Her lyrics touch on relationship struggles and personal darkness, but her vocals feel bright and sincere. Her acoustic version of her song ‘So my darling’ has been streamed almost 10 million times.
    Megan and Rachel chatted a few weeks back about her stage fright, why she decided to speak out against unconscious bias in the industry and what we can expect from incoming new music.

This week, Megan's speaking to singer-songwriter, Lola Young.
    Known for her huge voice and relatable lyrics, Lola has had an incredible few years. She's been signed to Island records, been nominated for a Brit, named in the BBC sound of 2022 poll and also performed on The Graham Norton show and the Late Late Show with James Cordon. Writing songs from the age of 11, the now 21 year old has a big future ahead of her with managers of both Adele and the late icon, Amy Winehouse backing her.
    Megan and Lola spoke over zoom and chatted about her cutting her teeth doing shows to an empty room, the importance of having a strong sense of self and how her songs have helped her process what she was going through when she wrote them.

This week, Megan's speaking to esteemed rapper, ENNY.
     
    Born and raised in South East London, ENNY grew up dreaming of becoming an artist. After being spotted by Hackney artist development programme Route 73, and working on releases with them, ENNY was introduced to Jorja Smith and later signed to her label, Famm. 
    She’s since recorded a special colours show with Jorja of her enormous track, Peng Black Girls, released her own EP: Under 25 and has recently been announced to play the Great Escape spotlight show alongside Temms and Gabriels. 
    In this episode Megan and ENNY chat about the music she grew up with, the vulnerability of putting your lyrics out into the world and the importance of being yourself.

This week, Megan's speaking to musician, poet, designer and so much more, Sinead O’Brien.
    Sinead’s music has strong and clear intentions. Focussed on language, Sinead uses melody to add power to her words, making listening experiential. Combine that with the music of guitarist Julian Hanson and drummer Oscar Roberston and you have a distinctive and original sound that is instantly recognisable. Originally from Limerick, Sinead studied fashion design in Dublin before working as a full-time designer for Galliano in Paris and then Vivienne Westwood in London, until she felt a call to start creating in the music world. 
    In this episode Megan and Sinead about the music that led her to becoming an artist, ‘responding to the room’ in a live setting and what we can expect from her highly anticipated debut album, Time Bend and Break The Bower.

    Jaguar has had an incredible few years; not only has she been named Mixmag Broadcaster of 2021, but she’s also been given the award for Best Radio Show by DJ Mag for her BBC introducing Dance show. She’s also responsible for the launch of Future1000 in collab with Virtuoso, an amazing initiative designed to help more young women, non-binary and trans artists learn how to DJ. And aside from all of this she runs her night, Utopia which she’s just announced the UK tour of. 
    We chatted a few weeks back and Jaguar told me all about how she broke into the competitive industry of doing and broadcasting, hosting the first ever introducing dance show on the BBC and trying sober DJing.
