Season 2 Episode 13 - The Square Shaped Room

Season 2 Episode 13 - The Square Shaped Room

This week it's all about style and interior design. Lou wants to redecorate his living room as a surprise for his wife while she's away at a fat farm (yeah, we know). But he can't do it alone, so he enlists Mary's help in finding a designer, and she just so happens to know the perfect person for the job — Rhoda.

Styles clash and needs aren't perfectly met, but the simplest solutions turn out to be the best fixes.

Meanwhile, we chat about ... well, interior design. And it wouldn't be an episode of After All if we didn't toss gender roles, socially-imposed stereotypes, and a whole lot of cultural dissection into the mix.

Season 2 Episode 12 - Is A Friend In Need

Season 2 Episode 12 - Is A Friend In Need

This week's episode, originally recorded *checks watch* last June(?!), definitely reads differently in our current climate.

Rhoda is unceremoniously fired from her job and spends a week loafing around, mildly depressed, on Mary's couch. Mary tries to be encouraging but winds up not pushing her at all to find a new job, whereas Phyllis leans into the tough love approach with little self-awareness. In the end, she finds the perfect job and everything's great!

Meanwhile, the conversation in this particularly digressive episode, Ariel talks about the life-changing impact of losing a job that crushes your soul, the scary reality of working as a full-time freelancer in our current (read, 2019) economy, and how hard it can be to bounce back from being fired. Oh, Ariel also "guilts" Silvia over an idiom.

    Season 2 Episode 11 - The Six-And-A-Half Year Itch

    Season 2 Episode 11 - The Six-And-A-Half Year Itch

It only took us 9 months but we're back with some banked episodes from last year, before ... well, everything.

This week, Lou finds out something unsettling about his favourite son-in-law — he was planning on cheating on his wife, Lou's daughter, and having an affair. This episode discusses the various issues with toxic masculinity of the day, including the presentation of adultery as a kind of right of passage and proof of machismo. We talk about sex, mutual pleasure, and so much more!

Season 2 Episode 9 - And Now, Sitting In For Ted Baxter

Season 2 Episode 9 - And Now, Sitting In For Ted Baxter

    And we're back!

After what felt like forever, but was really seven months, we are back! Unfortunately, life just got in the way at the tail end of last year and the beginning of this one, so we had to take a bit of a personal leave of absence. But now we're back with a missing episode!

Back in November it turned out we were missing episode 9. Something went wrong with the recording, and more than half of it was just gone. So, now we've gone back and re-recorded that episode for you!

Episode 9 "And Now, Sitting In For Ted Baxter" exposes the truth about why Ted never takes vacation: he knows he sucks at his job and doesn't want to be replaced. What should be a beautiful teaching moment for him just seems to reinforce his more negative traits, but we're along for the ride to dig into it.

Along the way we touch on tokenism - in our cases both as women and as Jewish people - poorly-chosen comments from the Editor-in-Chief of the Atlantic, abortion bans, and what happens when only men are allowed in the room. There's a lot to chew on this week, so tune in, sit back, and enjoy!

    Season 2 Episode 10 - Don't Break The Chain

    Season 2 Episode 10 - Don't Break The Chain

This week is all about superstition! Lou sends a chain letter to everyone in the WJM office, and Mary is tempted to trash the thing and break the chain. Lou, however, guilts her into keeping up with it. Through this, she has the great misfortune of being reconnected with a man from hers - and Rhoda's - past: Armand Linton!

Through Mr. Linton's heinous codependence, we discuss bad dates, the many fish (and 14 billion pounds of trash) in the sea, the do's and don'ts of dating etiquette, and much more.

Season 2 Episode 8 - Thoroughly Unmilitant Mary

Season 2 Episode 8 - Thoroughly Unmilitant Mary

As the writers and anchors of WJM-TV go on strike, Lou and Mary are left to fend for themselves as best they can. Meanwhile we discuss some of the larger strikes in US history, as well as the expectations placed on us under pressure and how we perform.

Fun with uneven sound

Great fun podcast but the sound was uneven. It sounded like people moved away from the mics sometimes, and I struggled to hear occasionally - and I was using earphones! Otherwise tons of fun. Thanks.

Helen725 ,

I love your Mary Tyler Moore podcast!!

I love your Mary Tyler Moore podcast!
It’s so great to find other people who love the show! I’ve been watching the Mary Tyler Moore show for quite some time in reruns since the past few years. I thought I was the only one who loves the show.

I don’t remember watching it when it originally aired as I was a little girl during the 70s. Mary has the best outfits! I think they would be almost in fashion now.

Really love your insight into each episode and I love the mother and daughter banter.
You both remind me of Katie and Carol on the comedy show Great News. Carol is played by Andrea Martin. The show is about a mother and daughter working for the same news show.

I’m also a fellow Canadian. I’m originally from Toronto and I currently live in Oakville.

Looking forward to more episodes. I just started listening to your podcast last week and I’m already up to episode 10.

Kindest Regards,
Helen

Stick to the Show

This mother and daughter team, besides being repugnant and profane, are unable to give a review of the show without their ideological and radical feninazi views predominating. MTM would be appalled. Stick to reviewing the show. Your leftist take on everything else is nauseating and quite juvenile.
