The Queer History of Drag and Conservative Backlash

The Queer History of Drag and Conservative Backlash

Conservatives are outraged by kids’ exposure to drag shows and there’s been an increase in protests at drag events. But drag dates all the way back to ancient societies and Shakespearean theater. Host Roy Wood Jr. chats with the star of HBO’s We’re Here, Bob the Drag Queen, Princeton journalism professor,  Channing Joseph, and author of the book, Drag: Combing Through The Big Wigs of Show Business, Frank DeCaro. They chat about Black and Queer trailblazers, the legacy of drag activism, and how representation from shows like Rupaul’s Drag Race has helped make drag more mainstream and builds allyship among its viewers. Bob also talks about his personal journey growing up in the south and the challenges he faced filming season 3 of We’re Here. Bob even gives Roy a drag queen name.

Dezwood ,

Eyes opened

As a 42 year old, white, heterosexual man from an extremely conservative part of Canada I feel like I am seeing the world in technicolor. I am the father of two little girls that will be growing up in a more diverse world than I was exposed to in my home town of 50 people. Your podcast has taught me so much. I have traveled around the world but was blissfully ignorant to so many systemic problems. Thank you for the education and the laughter

Accesible and informative

I was listening to the “racist highways” episode (April 2022) and my 8yo heard it and asked me to keep it on so he could listen too. The boy who regularity begs for hip-hop over news in the car listened to the entire episode, making comments and asking for the occasional clarification, and then asked for another (he settled on “pink tax”). A great show for the whole family to learn and dig deeper and laugh, too. Thanks RWJr!

Love it

I almost always prefer a long form chat rather than short clips - it’s a laid back listen to funny people talking about important stuff. Sit back and enjoy.
