The future of esports in Canada

Get ready to discover what Canada's professional video gaming industry looks like, and where its future is going to take us, in this episode of the Canadian Dream Podcast! We're joined today by Kevin Dhir, a young entrepreneur and the CEO of Galint Gaming, to learn more about competitive video games (esports) and what the global community of gamers means to its members. Galint Gaming came out of Kevin's love of video games, which started in his early childhood. Many of his fond memories growing up included gaming with his friends and family. He played leadership roles in esports clubs in high school and university, and a Super Smash Bros tournament he began hosting while completing his degree in Business and Computer Science wound up growing so large it outsized his university's facilities... and he had to take it to the Vancouver Convention Centre! His flagship event is now known as the Battle of BC, and it attracts 2500 dedicated gamers from around the globe each year. During the pandemic, Kevin took his love of hosting gaming events and turned it into a full-time job when he realized just how much he missed playing games with other members of his community. He had been working as a software engineer, but realized that bringing people together over the shared love of gaming was his true calling. This prompted him to leave his job at Microsoft to become a full-time entrepreneur. In this episode, we'll learn about the challenges of starting a business in an emerging industry, what top notch video game players do to prepare for tournaments, and what the future holds for Galint Gaming. Leading underdogs to victory at the MBA Games

What are the MBA games, what does it take to win them, and how does participating in them permanently change your life for the better? All of these questions, and more, will be taken up in this episode of the Canadian Dream Podcast, starring Urvish Subodh! Urvish works for the University of Canada West, and recently led their team to a first-place win in the MBA games despite the fact they were the underdogs competing against groups of students from much larger universities. In our episode, he'll describe the games, the training his team had to go through, and the lasting bonds that were formed between teammates. Urvish will also share his own immigration journey to Canada, starting with his upbringing in India. We'll learn about how the caste system impacted his life, and what his family had to go through, in order to set him up for the life he'd go on to live. Urvish's father's hard work meant that his son got the opportunity to go study in England, and would later come to Canada to pursue his MBA at Vancouver Island University. But, like many other immigrants have experienced before him, he found that despite having extensive business qualifications, he had to settle for dead-end jobs and grind to make it to where he is today. He had to work as a janitor and gas station attendant in order to make ends meet, while accepting help from friends of friends. But all his hard work paid off, and today, he's proudly living his Canadian Dream! The big mistakes small businesses should avoid

In this episode of the Canadian Dream Podcast, we'll discuss accounting and entrepreneurship with Matt Tompkins, a CPA and the founder of Elevate Financial Group! Matt’s journey from a structured career in a global accounting firm to launching his own boutique firm during the pandemic highlights the unpredictable and dynamic nature of entrepreneurship. We'll learn about how he created Elevate Financial out of the recognition of a gap in the market for tailored financial services to smaller businesses, a niche he identified while working with larger clients. Matt shares his experience grappling with perfectionism, a trait common in the accounting profession, and how it conflicted with the real-world needs of running a business. We'll discuss how waiting for a "perfect moment" will stall your progress, as that moment will never come, and why striving for just "good enough" can revolutionize the way you do business. We'll explore the evolution of Matt's business from a solo venture to a growing team of over a dozen employees. He reflects on the challenges of scaling, including dealing with burnout and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. He candidly describes a period of intense stress and burnout, revealing how he overcame it by stepping back, gaining perspective, and realigning his approach to business and personal well-being. Matt’s insights extend to the broader entrepreneurial experience, including the stark contrasts between the perceived ease of ownership versus the reality of the responsibilities and pressures involved. He contrasts the glamour often associated with business success with the daily grind of managing and growing a business, which often includes unseen challenges and sacrifices. As Matt navigates his role between being an accountant and an entrepreneur, he acknowledges that leading a business requires a shift in focus from technical skills to strategic leadership and team management.
