    Hello Drifters,
It’s Joe, with a note for the Spring.
I hope your April has been good and that you’ve got your garden plotted out. If not, there’s still time and I am glad for that because personally, I’m not sure what to do with the special bean seeds I received from some nice people at my show in Kalamazoo.
For a stretch in Spring ’22, I was ending tour shows by tossing out seed packets while Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ played loudly - comedy doesn’t have to be complicated.
The seeds I received were the same seeds I had tossed out last time I performed in Southwest Michigan, just two generations of beans later. Pretty cool. And though I am excited to plant them, I am not sure where.
While I was on the road last month, my basement flooded for the 4th time since I’ve moved in, this time from the water heater bursting. And February, before I left, there was also a leak behind the bathroom wall so I think it’s time to move out when my lease expires in July and find a new basement or even an upstairs office! The tricky part is that it’s right in the middle of growing season - perhaps I will put them in pots I can move with me.
I talked about the bathroom leak a bit during the end of the Drifting Off Live show, which now feels even more like a suitable finale to Season 1 of the podcast than it did at the time. The basement days are coming to a close and we’ll find a new podcast hole, one with character and quiet but ideally, a little less water.
In the meanwhile, Ryan just finished editing the live show “Drifting Off: Live at the Brooklyn Opera House and I’m excited to share it with you:
    patreon.com/DriftingOffwithJoePera/shop
It’s got new material from me, sections from the podcast performed live, and some sleep pieces from friends, all accompanied by the band, Hour and Ryan Dann.
In order to avoid making a mess by unpausing and repausing the patreon, we just made it available on the patreon shop. It’s set as the same price as the lowest tier ($3).
Here are just a couple notes:
-It blends the energy of the regular sleep podcast with the that of a live comedy show. There are parts you may doze off at, especially the ending, but there’s also audience laughter throughout, just so you are aware.
-Roger Clark’s bit from the show is not in this release - we’ll release it eventually but for a few reasons, we are keeping it in the archives for a bit.
-If you decide to buy, doing it on your computer and listening online or on the Patreon app will save you some money. Apple takes 30% from the store on iPhones so it automatically raises the price (the joys of tech monopolies, you know?). It is probably more convenient, just wanted to let you know in case you enjoy being thrifty like me.
-It’s a great show. I genuinely enjoyed re-listening to the recording and felt good and calm by the end. It’s a nice conclusion to Season 1 of the show.
And that’s the deal with the release. Til we get to next season, we’ll occasionally share some stuff in here and Ryan’s putting out his own adjacent but different podcast as well:
    https://www.patreon.com/HollandPatentPostalUnion
I’m listening to Hour’s new album while writing:
    https://itshr.bandcamp.com/album/ease-the-work
If you’re looking for a watch in the same vein, I thoroughly enjoyed the film ‘Fallen Leaves’ and I can’t say enough about ‘Bread Factory Parts 1 & 2’ if you’re feeling adventurous.
    Sincerely,
    Joe (& Ryan & Grant)

    The Holland Patent Postal Union

As you may have heard, Drifting Off is on a brief hiatus. But in the meantime, here's the first episode of Ryan's new project - the Holland Patent Postal Union. The 2nd episode is also live everywhere you get your podcasts.

    Hey Drifters,

Ryan here. Drifting Off is on hiatus, but I want to keep making stuff. So I’m starting an audio project I’ve wanted to do for a while called the Holland Patent Postal Union in which I write audio letters to people. It might not put you to sleep, but if you’ve enjoyed the music and sound design aspect of Drifting Off, the Holland Patent Postal Union is going to dig a little deeper in that direction.

Joe, Grant, and I appreciate all the support you’ve given us this past year, and personally it was some of my favorite work. If you like what you hear and want to hear more, consider signing up over at the Patreon (link below) for early access and exclusive stuff or keep an eye out for episodes at the usual podcast spots in a few weeks. Thanks for listening!

Ep. 12: Australia and its Greatest Horse ft. Cut Worms

Drifting Off Live in Brooklyn, February 24th: https://wl.seetickets.us/event/joe-pera/578625?afflky=Murmrr

I am excited to share with you this new episode, a trip to a place where it is currently summer, Australia.

Not that you and I are afraid of the cold but a number of coincidences have been pointing me towards that weird southern continent lately so I figured we’d see what it’s about. I called some comedians I know from the region and asked them to share what’s going on. They’re some of my favorites so I included some of their work as well as a link to the new album by Cut Worms who composed the score for us this month.

I also wanted to let you know that after this episode, we’ll be taking a break for a bit. It’s just a lot to manage while touring and I want to make sure all of the episodes are special and high-quality.

Thank you so much for your support this past year - we always wanted to continue our previous sleep work and you gave us the opportunity to create 12 new pieces (including WaterfallTV), not to mention the extended editions.

It means a lot to us and all the musicians and comics you supported well. We hope you got some good laughs and good nights of sleep while listening.

We’ll be back but in the meanwhile, follow Ryan on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hollandpatentpubliclibrary/

Thanks again and we hope you’ll enjoy the episode,

A return to favorite subject matter, here's an episode to ring in the Holidays. Joe shares a poem he wrote about trees and reads 'The Fir Tree' by Hans Christian Andersen. Plenty more as well.

Ep. 10: WaterfallTV ft. Michael Nau

Ep. 10: WaterfallTV ft. Michael Nau

Disclaimer: Waterfall TV was intended as a relaxing visual experience, but for those of you who would prefer to imagine the falls, we made this audio version. If you enjoy what you hear, Waterfall TV can be watched on YouTube or the Drifting Off Patreon page. Hope you will consider supporting and enjoy the episode...
I've been collecting footage on tour and with the help of Marty Schousboe and an incredible score by Michael Nau, we've finally pieced it together. Ryan Dann did sound and Grant Farsi produced of course, in addition to making segments.
Thanks for being patient and I hope you'll enjoy these falls,
    Joe

Best Sleep Podcast

Joe Pera is my dad. Well not really, i have a dad who i love very much, and then also God is my father in a spiritual kinda sense, so i guess Joe Pera is more like my cool uncle who talks me to sleep. Thanks Uncle Joe.

Dehydrated Peach ,

An actual gem, much like Joe Pera himself

I don’t even know how to write reviews. I love this podcast, I love Joe’s chatting, I love the way the episodes are produced and the soundscapes are amazing. The perfect balance of keeping your mind from thinking stressful thoughts but also giving it space to dream with the various stories, rhythms and pauses.

Since the show is released once a month I’ve been playing this trick where I have to remember hearing the end of an episode before playing the next one on a subsequent night so I can really savour each one. This means I’ve listened to Clock Chimes and Video Games like 65 times each probably because they’re so good at having me start dreaming and doze off. Some sentences stick with me (“you’ve got an important surgery tomorrow” is so sweet for some reason) and hearing the beginning of some bits, I literally feel myself being propelled into dreamland (the Sky Harbour Airport bit? Good Christ).

Joe, you give off a certain self-aware goofy vibe that is as funny as it is comforting and, on that note, I’m going to stick my phone under my pillow and drift off. Thank you.

Joe is a real blessing

I just love Joe and everything he makes. He really is a gift to this world. Thanks for everything you do, Joe.
Oh, and Ryan’s music deserves just as much praise. I often listen to the soundtracks from the TV series. Thanks, from across the lake in Ontario.
