The United States has become synonymous with empire and endless war, American troops sit in 70% of the world's countries, and yet, most Americans don't know that. The military is joined disproportionately by a 'warrior caste’ whom carry this enormous burden, making a less diverse force and ensuring most of society doesn't see their sacrifice. And American tax dollars, funding hundreds of billions in unnecessary spending on global hegemony, are robbed from the domestic needs of ordinary Americans. We aim to change that. Join Henri, Keagan, Jovanni, Shiloh, and Monisha, six leftist US military veterans, as they discuss how to turn the tide against endless war and repair the damage America has caused abroad.

Shitcanning the media narrative on Ukraine w/ Olesya Orlenko – Ep 154
Jovanni sits down with independent journalist Olesya Orlenko, a Russian historian, who provides on-the-ground perspectives from Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. They discuss the roots of the conflict tracing back to the 2014 coup in Ukraine, the role of Western media in shaping narratives, and the views from both Russian and Ukrainian sides.
Olesya Orlenko is a Russian historian, researcher, and reporter. She studied at the Institute of Russian and Archive in Russia, History Archive Russia, and at the National Charter School in France. Her interest includes World War II, Nazi genocide and extermination policy, history of the far right movement, and theories in France.
Since 2014, Melissa has been closely following events in the Donbass province and has traveled to the war zone several times to gather facts of crimes committed by the Ukrainian army [00:03:00] against the inhabitants of the UNESCO and Lugansk regions. She became a journalist in 2016 and has been reporting on such facts since.
Olesya is an author, documentarian, and founder of the Russian Society of Friends of L’Humanité, a French left wing newspaper.

The propaganda power of “Saving Private Ryan” w/ Tom Secker – Ep 153
ClandesTime host Tom Secker joins Henri to discuss the 1998 World War 2 film, “Saving Private Ryan.” We spend ample time discussing that “horrific” opening scene and whether it’s as honest as Steven Spielberg would like it to be, as well as Spielberg’s tendency to sanitize and simplify so much of the combat. We cover the actual history of that section of Omaha beach, as well as the true story of the four brothers who were the inspiration for the film’s plot. Finally, we tackle the film’s religious themes and how this film serves WW2 cultural myths much more so than any factual account of WW2.

Col. Ann Wright on Gaza and the UN – Ep 150
Jovanni is joined by Colonel Ann Wright, former diplomat and retired U.S. Army colonel who resigned from the U.S. government in opposition to Bush’s war on Iraq. Jovanni and Ann discuss the lack of interest for diplomacy, the detrimental effects of transferring weapons into conflict areas, and Ann’s recent appearance at the UN, stressing the toll of Israel’s genocide against Gaza. Ann stresses the economic benefit to weapon manufacturers and corporations as one of the primary motivators for war, rather than striving for peace and diplomatic resolutions to conflicts.

In her 29 year career in the Army and Army Reserve, Colonel Anne Wright served at the NATO Subcommand Allied Forces Central Europe, and later as a diplomat serving in the U.S. Embassy in Nicaragua, Grenada, Somalia, Kyrgyzstan, Sierra Leone, Micronesia, Afghanistan, and Mongolia. She resigned from the U. S. government in March 2003 in opposition to Bush’s war on Iraq. She is an adversary, advisory, board member for, for Veterans for Peace, International Peace Bureau, World Beyond War, Gaza Freedom Flotilla, No to NATO, Hawaii Peace and Justice, Pacific Peace Network, Women Cross the DMZ, and Campaign for Peace.

Some brutally honest testimony from... actual vets!
I cannot deny Henry and Danny, the hosts of FOAH, a huge amount of respect for the courage to criticize the military that they themselves are enlisted in.
I am immensely critical of the way western forces have been used but I will never draw a final judgement if I don’t have some facts. These guys give us those facts. They aren’t speaking for the whole military, you may not agree with everything they say, but you will come away much better informed on military procedure from actual soldiers.
Henry and Danny are not rogues nor have they washed their hands of the military. They are very proud soldiers and they are proud of their brothers & sisters in uniform. It’s important to remember that. FOAH is a podcast about issues relevant to veterans. These are topics that are not always easy to hear but they are pretty essential if you want to get a fuller picture of what’s happening in this world (if, of course you aren’t a veteran). I mean, do we need an actual veteran to come over and tell us not to use vets as props for our Facebook memes? Really!
The recording quality starts off a little rough but these guys tighten it up within a couple episodes. Henry and Danny are not dry hosts either. Pretty quick-witted and compelling speakers. I would go see these guys if they did a talk up here in frosty Canada.
